Job description

City Clerk Opportunity

The City of Mequon is looking for an organized, knowledgeable, and service-minded professional to serve as our next City Clerk as our longtime City Clerk prepares to retire. This is a unique opportunity to play a vital role in how the City conducts elections, preserves its history, supports public transparency, and carries out the business of local government. You will be a key partner to the Common Council, City Administrator, department leaders, elected officials, candidates, and residents—and will help ensure that the City's government operates efficiently, transparently, and in accordance with state law and local ordinances.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the City's election operations, overseeing elections, recruiting and training poll workers, coordinating ballots and election equipment, managing voter registration, and ensuring election results are accurately canvassed and reported.
  • Support the City's legislative process, attending Common Council and other board and commission meetings, preparing agendas and meeting materials, recording official minutes, and helping ensure that ordinances and resolutions are properly documented and codified.
  • Protect the City's public records and history, serving as the official custodian of City records and overseeing records retention, disposition, certification, and public access.
  • Promote transparency and public service, coordinating responses to open records requests and responding to general inquiries.
  • Oversee municipal licensing, administering a variety of permits and licenses.
  • Lead and develop staff, managing the day-to-day operations of the Clerk's Office.
  • Work across the organization, coordinating with City departments, boards and commissions, outside agencies, vendors, and members of the community.

What We're Looking For

We're seeking a confident, detail-oriented leader who thrives in a fast-paced public service environment. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator with strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to interpret and apply complex laws and regulations. You'll be someone who can balance competing priorities, maintain accuracy and confidentiality, work effectively with elected officials, staff, and the public, and lead others with professionalism, diplomacy, and initiative.

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Administration, Political Science, or Business Management and 3-5 years of progressively responsible supervisory experience, preferably as a municipal clerk or deputy clerk, are required. Certification as a Municipal Clerk is preferred.

Current salary range: $89,734 - $125,628. The City offers a competitive benefits package including:

  • Generous paid time off: 18 PTO days, plus 9.5 paid holidays annually.
  • Comprehensive health, vision, and dental insurance options for individuals and families.
  • Participation in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) pension plan.
  • Employer-paid life and long-term disability insurance.
  • Access to supplemental benefits including accident and pet insurance.
  • Continuing education assistance and career development support.
  • Annual wellness incentives, staff appreciation events and "summer schedule" from May through September.
