Maintenance Supervisor (Nights) - Decatur

What you will do:
The Maintenance Supervisor provides front line technical and team leadership to ensure operational reliability through the effective development and deployment of maintenance personnel and systems. Their main objective is to sustain and improve plant processes, equipment, systems, utilities, infrastructure, and physical plant assets, emphasizing proactive maintenance. Will ensure that processes are functional and validated for performance to both their design capability and to their inherent reliability specifications while meeting applicable regulatory and food industry compliance standards. The Maintenance Supervisor will also apply continuous improvement techniques, including Lean, Six Sigma, 5S, structured problem solving, Kaizen, etc. as applicable. Works collaboratively with production department managers and supervisors to ensure maintenance activities are properly prioritized and executed efficiently and timely, while also functioning as project manager on small to medium scale capital and non-capital maintenance and equipment projects.
Managerial responsibilities include: selecting top talent and onboarding/training new employees; following, and ensuring that all employees follow, all personnel rules and policies; holding employees accountable for performing their daily duties and demonstrating appropriate workplace behaviors; providing continuous feedback, coaching, and timely effective discipline when necessary; evaluating, monitoring and providing regular feedback on employees' performance; tracking employees' attendance and verifying accuracy of daily timekeeping records; holding effective, regular, team meetings; demonstrating financial responsibility by protecting the employers' financial interests; and serving as role model by demonstrating professionalism, honesty, integrity, ethical behavior and living our company values.
Here's a day in the life:
  • Provide supervision and direction to skilled hourly employees in a 24/7 manufacturing environment.
  • Policy & contract enforcement, job & quality supervision.
  • Manage IMT (Industrial Maintenance Technology) program participation.
  • Manage Electrical apprenticeship program participation and tracking.
  • Manage CARO/CIRO industrial refrigeration certification and continuing education.
  • Manage ProPay advancements, training, evaluation, and administration.
  • Direct activities to ensure timely completion of emergency repairs, routine repairs and preventive maintenance in the plant to minimize downtime and enable smooth and efficient production, startups and changeovers.
  • WO (work order) prioritization, personnel assignment, scheduling, and closing.
  • Work in conjunction with plant supervision in analyzing work orders issued vs. time to complete to ensure appropriate allocation of material and resources.
  • Develop and implement an effective reliability-centered maintenance program to achieve maximum capabilities of equipment at minimum costs.
  • CMMS (computerized maintenance management system) duties associated with WO administration.
  • Communication of above with both the team and the rest of organization, including development and generation of reports and KPI's.
  • Parts research/technical liaison.
  • Coordination of outside maintenance service providers.
  • Write Work Instructions and SOP's (standard operating procedures).
  • Evaluate the plant operation from multiple perspectives (mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, structural, etc.) for the purpose of suggesting modification to the plant and its equipment, resulting in better flow of material, higher productivity and quality, greater safety or more efficient use of utilities.
  • Place orders for parts, services and inventory.
  • Act as a liaison with various regulatory agencies and maintain licenses & certifications in place.
  • Supervision and oversight of Utility Operations (boiler, refrigeration systems, compressed air, fire protection, HVAC, water, backup power).
  • Make, plan and lead capital and non-capital maintenance and equipment projects to ensure timely and cost-effective achievement of project objectives.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors and the general public.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Utilize a computer with basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint.
  • Act as a team player and be able to interact with staff at all levels of the company.
  • Work under pressure, meet deadlines, and be flexible in working on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrate excellent problem solving and trouble-shooting skills with the ability to make clear, rational decisions under pressure.
  • Demonstrate excellent time-management skills with the ability to work independently with little supervision.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, chemical, industrial or a general engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of supervisor or leadership experience in maintenance, preferably in food manufacturing.
  • Dairy and/or liquid processing and ammonia refrigeration experience preferred. Milk, Cream, and Ice Cream knowledge is a plus.
  • Experience in the implementation or management of a CMMS program.
  • Working knowledge of PLC's, Process Safety Management and a good understanding of general process control.
  • Project management and budget management experience.
  • Weekends, nights, and off shifts required.
  • Forklift certification required.

Working Conditions:
  • Administration: Individual workspace, desk and computer. May not be temperature controlled, could have loud background noises. May include entering production facility and walking on uneven, slippery surfaces and encountering forklift traffic. Requires sitting majority of shift; can include standing and walking to accomplish tasks. May require stooping, bending and crouching to file, retrieve supplies. Occasional lifting of 55 pounds.
  • Maintenance: Work is normally in plant environment. Can include working outside in all weather conditions, working in confined spaces and in poorly lighted areas, walking on uneven, slippery surfaces and encountering forklift traffic. Requires standing majority of shift, walking on uneven, slippery surfaces, stooping, bending and crouching and climbing ladders. Duties may include lifting up to 55 pounds and maneuvering heavy equipment and/or parts.
