Job description

Summary:

The shift engineer operates and controls the central heating and cooling plant, along with associated satellite plants to support continuous, reliable delivery of steam and chilled water across campus and affiliated agencies. This role is responsible for maintaining plant operations during assigned shifts, supervising boiler operators, responding to abnormal or emergency operating conditions, and performing operational and routine maintenance activities. This position functions within a safetycritical environment and plays a key role in maintaining plant reliability, regulatory compliance, and uninterrupted service to support teaching, research, healthcare, and broader campus operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises boiler operations staff, assigning tasks, providing technical guidance, and supporting on-the-job training and skill development.
  • Identifies abnormal operating conditions and implements corrective actions to stabilize plant systems and mitigate operational risk.
  • Analyzes operating data, instrument readings, and trends, performs calculations, and records operational logs, incidents, and equipment performance using electronic and manual systems.
  • Coordinates plant-related maintenance and repair activities with facilities trades, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Reviews and interprets drawings, schematics, and technical documentation to support troubleshooting, maintenance planning, and installation activities.
  • Conducts chemical testing and treatment adjustments to maintain boiler feedwater, cooling water, and closed-loop system chemistry within specified operating ranges.
  • Performs operational maintenance activities, such as equipment repairs, component replacement, valve and pump servicing, and minor installations, within certification and authorization limits.
  • Operates, monitors, and regulates boilers, chillers, turbines, pumps, and auxiliary systems within the heating and cooling plant and satellite plants, in compliance with operating procedures, regulatory requirements, and established parameters.
  • Participates in preventive, predictive, and reliability-centered maintenance activities by identifying equipment condition issues, documenting maintenance requirements, and supporting scheduled work execution.
  • Briefs incoming shift personnel on operational status, plant conditions, risks, and work priorities.
  • Monitors fire alarm and life safety systems associated with plant operations and initiates established campus emergency and alarm response procedures.
  • Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment.
  • Builds and leads diverse teams, champions inclusive leadership, and values different perspectives. 
  • Engages in and supports the understanding and growth of employees with the frameworks, initiatives and activities relating to equity, diversity and inclusion and Indigenous engagement. 
  • Undertakes related duties, as assigned, consistent with the nature of the position. 
Qualifications:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A valid 2nd Class Power Engineer Certificate and Refrigeration Engineer's Operating Certificate.
  • A valid Class 5 driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Minimum of four years of experience operating medium- to large-scale high-pressure steam plants and multi-chiller chilling plants.
  • Knowledge of computer-based boiler and chiller control systems.
  • Strong technical troubleshooting and diagnostic skills applied to complex mechanical and process systems.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, balance competing demands, and maintain operational focus in high-pressure or emergency situations.
  • Ability to perform frequent physical labour, including lifting, carrying, climbing, kneeling, and prolonged standing. 
  • Ability to tolerateexposure to steam systems, confined spaces, extreme heat, and elevated work areas.  
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and technical documents.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications, email, and plant control interfaces.
