What are some typical challenges a maintenance manager might face when leading a diverse team?

Department: Store Operations

Position Summary

The Evening Manager is responsible for leading store operations during the afternoon and evening hours and serves as the primary Manager on Duty. This position provides leadership across all departments, ensures customers receive excellent service, supports employees and department leaders, and maintains store standards through closing.

The ideal candidate is a strong floor leader who is comfortable making decisions, addressing operational issues, and taking ownership of the store during their shift.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Serve as the Manager on Duty from 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM.
  • Provide leadership and operational support across all store departments.
  • Maintain a visible presence throughout the sales floor and actively respond to customer and employee needs.
  • Ensure high standards for customer service, store conditions, product availability, cleanliness, and safety.
  • Direct employees and adjust staffing or priorities based on business needs.
  • Support department teams with stocking, merchandising, recovery, customer service, and operational needs when necessary.
  • Address customer concerns and resolve issues professionally.
  • Monitor employee productivity, attendance, performance, and adherence to company policies.
  • Ensure breaks and meal periods are appropriately managed.
  • Support Front End operations, including customer service, cash-handling concerns, overrides, and closing procedures.
  • Complete store closing procedures and ensure the building is properly secured.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, safety concerns, equipment issues, shoplifting, or other incidents.
  • Communicate significant operational, employee, or customer issues to store leadership.
  • Help maintain compliance with food safety, workplace safety, security, and company policies.
  • Assist with training, coaching, and development of employees.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support overall store operations.
Qualifications
  • 2–3 years of retail supervisory or management experience required.
  • Grocery, supermarket, or other high-volume retail experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead employees and manage store operations independently.
  • Strong customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication, organization, and follow-through.
  • Comfortable addressing performance, attendance, and customer-service issues.
  • Basic understanding of retail cash controls, merchandising, inventory, and loss prevention.
What Success Looks Like

The Evening Manager leaves the store in excellent condition each night. Customers are taken care of, employees have clear direction, departments remain operationally strong, problems are addressed rather than passed along, and the store is clean, organized, safe, and ready for the next business day.

Requirements

Schedule Requirements
  • Regular schedule is 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM.
  • Must have availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays based on business needs.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality are essential.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to regularly bend, reach, push, pull, and perform typical retail activities.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds when necessary.
  • Ability to work throughout grocery, refrigerated, frozen, and other store environments.
