What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mainframe Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mainframe Developer, you need expertise in programming languages such as COBOL, JCL, and SQL, along with a strong understanding of mainframe operating systems and batch processing concepts. Familiarity with tools like IBM z/OS, DB2, CICS, and version control systems is typically required, and certifications from IBM or related organizations can be beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help Mainframe Developers excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial for maintaining, optimizing, and modernizing legacy systems that are vital to many large organizations’ operations.

What are some common challenges Mainframe Developers face when integrating legacy systems with modern applications?

Mainframe Developers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between legacy systems and newer technologies, managing data migration without disrupting business operations, and maintaining the security of sensitive data. Effective communication with cross-functional teams, such as application developers and infrastructure engineers, is essential to address these challenges. Staying updated on both mainframe and modern programming practices helps ease integration and ensures long-term system reliability.

What are Mainframe Developers?

Mainframe Developers are specialized software engineers who design, develop, maintain, and troubleshoot applications on mainframe computer systems, such as IBM's z/OS. They typically work with languages like COBOL, JCL, and CICS, and are responsible for ensuring the performance, security, and reliability of mission-critical business applications. Mainframe Developers are commonly employed in industries like banking, insurance, and government, where large-scale, high-volume transaction processing is essential.

Job description

We are seeking a Senior Manager of IT Integration & EDI to lead the strategy, modernization, and execution of Orgill's integration and EDI ecosystem. This is a highly visible leadership role responsible for how Orgill connects with its ecosystem of dealers, vendors, and internal systems.
You will play a pivotal role in transforming our integration landscape-leading the transition from legacy point-to-point connections to a modern platform. Your leadership will ensure our multi-billion-dollar supply chain remains agile, scalable, and resilient as we evolve from mainframe-based systems to cloud-enabled, best-in-class platforms.
This role is ideal for a hands-on leader who can balance strategic vision with technical depth-someone who can build and guide teams, influence architecture, and deliver mission-critical integrations at scale.
Key Responsibilities
Integration Strategy & Architecture
  • Define and execute an enterprise-wide integration strategy centered on modern integration solutions and reusable services
  • Lead the evolution from legacy point-to-point integrations to scalable, modern integration solutions
  • Architect and oversee complex data flows across mainframe systems, Oracle ERP, SaaS platforms, and cloud-native applications

EDI Strategy & Execution
  • Oversee the end-to-end EDI ecosystem, including high-volume ANSI X12 transactions (POs, ASNs, invoicing), interacting with almost every part of the internal Business and external Dealers and Vendors
  • Leverage platforms such as SPS Commerce and Cleo to drive vendor enablement and operational efficiency
  • Ensure reliability, scalability, and accuracy of all B2B transaction flows

Platform Leadership & Engineering Excellence
  • Own the roadmap, expansion, and optimization of a Tier 1 integration platform (MuleSoft preferred)
  • Establish best practices for API design, lifecycle management, security, and reuse
  • Lead the transformation of the team from a reactive support model to a proactive engineering culture focused on clean architecture and innovation

Operational Excellence & Reliability
  • Lead a high-performing team responsible for 24/7 integration and EDI operations supporting critical supply chain processes
  • Implement monitoring, alerting, and proactive issue resolution to maintain system resilience and uptime

API Governance & Security
  • Partner with Enterprise Architecture to define and enforce enterprise API standards, governance models, and security protocols (OAuth, OpenID Connect)
  • Promote API reuse and consistency to accelerate delivery and reduce redundancy

Stakeholder Collaboration
  • Partner with senior IT and business leaders to align integration capabilities with Orgill's growth across wholesale distribution, services, and retail
  • Serve as a trusted advisor on integration strategy within the home hardware, lumber, and building materials (LBM) sector
Required Qualifications
  • 8-10+ years of IT experience with a strong focus on integration, preferably in retail and/or wholesale distribution; leading teams of several associates, including Engineers, Analysts and support team members, both on-site and remote, as well as on-shore and international
  • Proven experience as an Integration Architect, Lead Engineer, or similar role with deep technical expertise
  • Hands-on experience with MuleSoft (strongly preferred) or other Tier 1 integration platforms
  • Strong knowledge of ANSI X12 EDI standards and platforms such as SPS Commerce and Cleo
  • Demonstrated success integrating across hybrid environments (mainframe, on-prem, and cloud)
  • Experience leading large-scale technology transformations (e.g., monolith to microservices, API connectivity)
  • Ability to "speak code" and guide technical teams at a detailed level
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field
Preferred Skills
  • MuleSoft Certified Platform Architect or Integration Architect
  • Experience with Agile and DevOps practices in a distribution or supply chain environment
  • Strong understanding of modern API security standards (OAuth, OpenID Connect)
  • Prior experience in the Home Hardware or LBM industry
  • SPS Commerce and Cleo experience strongly preferred
Why Work for Orgill?
Impact at Scale As the world's largest independent hardlines distributor, your work supports over 6,000 independent retailers. Every API you build and every EDI transaction you optimize helps local businesses compete and thrive.
A "Legacy to Leading-Edge" Journey This is not a maintenance role-you are joining at a pivotal moment as we modernize our technology ecosystem to fuel future growth and innovation.
Stability Meets Innovation Founded in 1847, Orgill combines long-standing stability with forward-thinking investment. Our new 500,000-square-foot Concept Center in Collierville showcases the future of retail and supply chain innovation.
