The Position

Mail Services supports students, faculty, and staff at Roanoke College, and processes all incoming and outbound mail of all types for all of campus. The mail services assistant supports the daily operations and reports to the Mail Services manager. This role helps perform routine duties pertaining to Mail Services and assist in the supervision of that department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the training, scheduling and supervision of the student workers
  • Performs routine duties as needed including receipt and dispersal of incoming U.S. Mail, Amazon, FedEx, UPS and others, metering of outgoing mail, pick up and distribution of interdepartmental mail, forwarding mail in a timely manner
  • Processing transactions at the cash register using Federal postal guidelines to insure each item has adequate postage while using proper cash handling techniques
  • Perform opening and closing duties, including credit card processing and making daily deposits.
  • Follows through on instructions set forth by the Manager and contributes to the planning and implementation of new initiatives or process improvement
  • Assists in keeping accurate records
  • Responsible for assignment of campus mail boxes and the proper distribution of the related information
  • Stays abreast of all mailing regulations
  • Assists the coordination with processing all types of mailings including bulk mailings
  • Responsible for maintaining a pleasant, professional working relationship with all customers, coworkers and campus community members
  • Performs other tasks as assigned or mandated by the position

Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to read numbers correctly
  • Ability to read and effectively communicate in English.
  • Must be able to complete required training, which may be offered in-person or online.
  • Ability to use computer-based productivity software (i.e. Microsoft Office, Pitney Bowes SendSuite, etc.)
  • Previous experience in a mail room preferred

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Satisfactory conviction history background check.
  • Maintain a valid VA driver’s license, a clean DMV record and successful completion of required Roanoke College driver training programs.
  • Must be able to pass campus safety vehicle driver training.
