How much do machinists jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 26, 2026, the average hourly pay for machinists in the United States is $25.63, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.91 and $28.61 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges machinists face when working with new materials or technologies?

When working with new materials or advanced technologies, machinists often encounter challenges such as adjusting to unfamiliar machining properties, setting up specialized equipment, and ensuring precision while maintaining safety. Keeping up with the latest CNC programming languages or tool advancements can require additional training and adaptability. However, most employers provide hands-on training or mentorship to help machinists stay current and succeed in these evolving environments.

What exactly do machinists do?

Machinists operate machine tools such as lathes, mills, and grinders to produce precision metal parts based on technical drawings and specifications. They set up, adjust, and maintain equipment, often using measuring tools and computer programming skills, and typically work in manufacturing environments with safety protocols. Certification and technical training are common requirements for the role.

Can you make 100k as a machinist?

Machinists can earn $100,000 or more annually with advanced skills, experience, and specialization in high-demand areas such as aerospace or manufacturing. Achieving this salary often requires overtime, certifications, and working in regions with higher living costs or industry standards.

What is the highest paying machinist job?

The highest paying machinist jobs are often in specialized fields such as aerospace, medical device manufacturing, or precision machining, where advanced skills and certifications like CNC programming or quality control are required. Senior machinists with extensive experience and supervisory roles can also earn higher salaries, sometimes exceeding $70,000 annually depending on the industry and location.

What is the difference between Machinists vs CNC Operators?

AspectMachinistsCNC Operators
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; some certificationsHigh school diploma; often trained on the job or through certification programs
Work EnvironmentMachine shops, manufacturing plants, workshopsManufacturing facilities, machine shops, production lines
Job ResponsibilitiesDesign, set up, operate manual and CNC machines, interpret blueprintsOperate CNC machines based on programmed instructions, monitor machine operation
Industry UsageCommonly employed in manufacturing, aerospace, automotivePrimarily in manufacturing, especially in automated production

Machinists and CNC Operators both work in manufacturing environments and require technical skills. Machinists often handle manual and CNC machines, focusing on setup and precision, while CNC Operators primarily run programmed machines. Both roles are essential in production, but Machinists typically have broader responsibilities in machine setup and blueprint interpretation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machinist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machinist, you need strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and typically a high school diploma or technical certification in machining. Familiarity with CNC machines, lathes, milling machines, and CAD/CAM software is essential, along with understanding blueprints and technical drawings. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong manual dexterity help machinists excel in producing accurate components and troubleshooting equipment issues. These skills ensure high-quality, safe, and efficient production of parts in manufacturing environments.

What are machinists?

Machinists are skilled tradespeople who operate machine tools to produce precision metal parts, instruments, and tools. They work with various equipment such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, shape, and finish metal and plastic components according to detailed specifications. Machinists often read blueprints, use measuring instruments, and ensure that finished products meet strict quality standards. Their work is vital in manufacturing industries, including automotive, aerospace, and electronics.

What jobs pay $2000 a day?

Machinists typically do not earn $2000 a day; such high daily earnings are usually associated with specialized roles like aerospace or industrial machinery engineers, project managers, or highly experienced contractors in niche industries. These positions often require advanced skills, certifications, and extensive experience, and may involve working in high-stakes environments or on complex projects. Most machinist roles have lower daily pay rates, with annual salaries generally below this level.
