Job Summary:
The Machinist - Level 5 performs advanced machining tasks including the fabrication, repair, and modification of complex machine parts using manual and CNC equipment, welding, and flame cutting tools. This role interprets complex blueprints, process sheets, and 3D models to deliver precise, high-quality parts often requiring innovative problem-solving and technical judgment. The individual leads collaboration with engineers to develop part designs, optimize manufacturing processes, and troubleshoot production challenges. This position requires expert knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance, and process improvement to ensure maximum efficiency, reliability, and product quality.
Essential Duties:
Functional Operations:
  • Operates manual and CNC machinery using advanced machining skills to produce complex parts and assemblies
  • Demonstrates expert-level operation of CNC machinery with deep understanding of machinery and components
  • Programs CNC machines at an expert level, utilizing G-code and various CNC programming languages
  • Leads collaboration with engineers to develop and improve part designs and manufacturing processes
  • Executes repairs, rework, and modifications on mechanical assemblies to meet complex operational specifications
  • Applies expert welding techniques for equipment repair and structural support, including complex welds as required
  • Operates and maintains tools and equipment in assigned areas, ensuring proper calibration and upkeep
  • Capable of working all scheduled shifts

Performance Optimization & Continuous Improvement:
  • Manages time efficiently, monitors tool wear, and drives automation initiatives to enhance productivity and quality
  • Optimizes material usage and develops comprehensive waste management strategies
  • Implements initiatives and best practices to minimize resource waste and improve operational efficiency
  • Collaborates closely with engineers to perform in-depth root cause and failure analysis
  • Troubleshoots and improves product designs to ensure manufacturability and performance

Training & Team Support:
  • Provides expert guidance to train and develop Machinist Level 3 and Level 4 team members
  • Fosters skill development and knowledge transfer and may lead small teams or special projects within the machining function

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Communication:
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams resolve issues promptly and communicates findings and solutions effectively
  • Supports implementation of industry-standard complaint processes and procedures

Quality, Safety, & Compliance:
  • Maintains and promotes a culture of safety while handling advanced machinery, welding, and cutting equipment
  • Ensures strict adherence to safety regulations, standard operating procedures, and company quality policies
  • Champions 6S workplace organization standards and maintains a clean, safe, and highly organized work area, participating in safety audits
  • Adheres to all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements

Required:

  • CAD/CAM Software Certifications (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.)
  • NIMS (National Institute for Metalworking Skills) Certifications

Essential Qualifications
  • 4+ years of experience in CNC operations, manual machine operations, welding, and fabrication, demonstrating advanced technical proficiency
  • Experience fabricating simple fixtures and performing metal cutting/trimming work using tools, including welding
  • Expert knowledge of metallurgy and materials relevant to precision machining
  • Strong mathematical skills in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and applied measurement principles
  • Advanced ability to read, interpret, and apply engineering drawings, including complex three-dimensional models and blueprints
  • Proficient with precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges
  • Effective communication skills in English (reading, writing, and speaking)
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills with the ability to analyze and resolve complex machining issues independently
  • Proven ability to work autonomously with strong ownership, accountability, and an aptitude for spatial reasoning
  • Strong commitment to maintaining a safe, organized, and collaborative work environment

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of prior machine shop or manufacturing experience
  • Completion of machinist apprenticeship program or equivalent advanced training
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including mentoring, team leadership, or project coordination
  • Prior experience leading or contributing to continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives
  • Resilient, self-motivated, and able to perform effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Advanced knowledge and hands-on experience with emerging technologies such as 3D printing and laser cutting
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel), AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CAM programming, G-code programming, or equivalent CAD/CAM software

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements:
  • To ensure health and safety in the workplace and for employee protection, wearing PPE is required and includes equipment such as a full Tyvek suit, safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, face mask, and a full hazmat suit that includes a respirator. A respirator fit test will be required based on functional area.
