What does an M&A graduate do?

An M&A Graduate is an entry-level professional who supports mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activities within a company or financial institution. Their main responsibilities include conducting financial analysis, preparing presentations, assisting with due diligence, and supporting senior team members in deal execution. M&A Graduates typically work closely with experienced bankers or corporate development teams to help evaluate potential transactions and market opportunities. The role provides valuable exposure to the deal-making process and is a foundation for a career in investment banking or corporate finance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an M&A graduate, and why are they important?

To thrive as an M&A Graduate, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of finance and accounting, and a relevant degree such as finance, business, or economics. Familiarity with financial modeling, valuation techniques, Excel, and tools like Bloomberg or Capital IQ is commonly required. Outstanding communication, attention to detail, and teamwork abilities help distinguish top candidates in this fast-paced environment. These skills enable effective deal analysis, client interaction, and successful collaboration throughout complex merger and acquisition processes.

What typical responsibilities can an M&A graduate expect during their first year on the job?

As an M&A Graduate, you can expect to be involved in a range of tasks, including conducting industry and company research, assisting with financial modeling, preparing presentation materials, and supporting due diligence processes. You’ll work closely with senior team members, learning how to analyze potential deals and present findings to clients or internal stakeholders. The role is often fast-paced and requires strong attention to detail, but it offers excellent exposure to the full deal lifecycle and opportunities to learn directly from experienced professionals.

How to get into a mergers and acquisitions graduate role with no experience?

To secure a mergers and acquisitions graduate role with no experience, candidates should focus on gaining relevant skills such as financial analysis, valuation, and Excel proficiency through internships, coursework, or certifications like CFA. Demonstrating strong analytical abilities, a solid understanding of financial statements, and effective communication can improve chances, even without prior M&A experience.
