Job description

Job Summary:
Lutron Electronics is transforming how people experience light through intelligent, connected lighting devices and systems. They are seeking a Principal Data Scientist to lead complex data science and AI initiatives, influence company-wide strategy, and establish standards for the next generation of intelligent products and services.
Responsibilities:
• Execute multi-year, company-wide data science and AI initiatives with significant business and product impact. Move the company forward and show progress.
• Apply your problem-solving skills to address highly complex, ambiguous problems that span multiple domains and organizations
• Architect and deploy scalable machine learning and AI systems that serve as foundational platforms for multiple teams
• Partner with senior engineering, product, and business leaders to shape and execute Lutron’s Data & AI strategy
• Identify, evaluate, and incubate emerging technologies such as generative AI, reinforcement learning, and edge AI
• Establish best practices and standards for MLOps, responsible AI, model governance, and technical excellence
• Mentor and develop senior and staff-level data scientists and technical leaders
• Represent Lutron as a technical authority in data science and AI, both internally and externally
• Drive creation of reusable frameworks, platforms, and intellectual property
Qualifications:
Required:
• PhD degree in a STEM field, or MS degree and equivalent, recognized expertise in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field.
• Minimum, cumulative GPA of 3.00 for all degrees earned
• 12+ years of experience in data science, machine learning, and AI with sustained, enterprise-level impact
• Proven leadership track record leading teams and projects, coordinating across functions, and driving execution from concept through delivery.
• Deep expertise in advanced machine learning, AI systems, and large-scale production deployments
• Proven ability to influence strategy and technical direction across multiple organizations
• Exceptional communication skills, including executive-level technical storytelling
• Proficiency in Python, R, or Scala, and deep experience with modern ML frameworks and cloud platforms
• Expert in large-scale cloud deployment of ML/AI models
• Expert in MLOps
Preferred:
• Recognized thought leadership in applied data science or AI
• Background in IoT, embedded systems, or intelligent devices
• Experience contributing to patents, publications, or industry standards
