Job description

POSITION(S): Sign Language Interpreter

 

Site(s):  Nipomo High School & Arroyo Grande High School

 

REQUIREMENTS: 

 
  • Graduation from high school or its equivalent.
  • Must possess certification from ACCL (American Consortium of Certified Interpreters) or NAD (National Association for the Deaf) or RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf)

WORK DAYS: 191 days (Student Days Only) - 191 Day Work Year Calendar

 

Monday - Friday, 7 hours/day, 8:15 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.

   

SALARY: Range 40, salary placement from $31.55 - $43.96 hourly + 2% bilingual stipend

 

Salary prorated based on start date and prior experience.

TITLE:                     SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER
SALARY RANGE: 
40 plus 2% bilingual stipend
                                5% stipend for AA degree
                                10% stipend for bachelor or masters degree
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, to provide sign language interpreting/transliterating in academically related settings for deaf students.
QUALIFICATIONS
a. Required:
1. High school graduation or its equivalent.
2. Ability to communicate and relate effectively with students who are hearing impaired and who may have special needs; speak and write effectively; understand and follow oral and written instructions; work independently on own initiative; establish and maintain cooperative relationships; work calmly under pressure and with frequent interruptions.
3. Must pass NCLB paraprofessional examination
4. Must possess certification from ACCL (American Consortium of Certified Interpreters) or NAD (National Association for the Deaf) or RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf)
b. Desirable:
1. Knowledge and understanding of developmental stages of students with special needs.
2. Bachelor or Masters degree.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Interpret classroom instruction and school-related communications through sign language under the direction of a classroom teacher.
2. Facilitate communication between deaf students and hearing staff, faculty and/or community members in classrooms, labs, meetings and co-curricular activities.
3. Instruct in and expand student's sign language vocabulary.
4. Using and adapting teacher-prepared lesson plans, instruct students in prescribed subject matter.
5. Monitor on-campus student activities as assigned under the guidance and direction of an administrative staff    member.
6. Perform other duties as required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
2. Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
3. Ability to stand and circulate.
4. May require ability to ascend or descend steps.
5. Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids.
6. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
7. Ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation.
8. Ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 10 pounds on an irregular basis.
9. Physical dexterity in limbs and digits to perform sign language.
