Job description

SUMMARY

The Service Engineering Manager is a support function of our LTSA/Service Operations groups. The overarching goal is to provide technical engineering services to enable Mitsubishi Power to be first in class large frame Gas Turbine service provider for Mitsubishi J, G, and F Frames, W501F, and other OEM as determined by the business. The Service Engineer Manager also provides technical engineering support for Mitsubishi Steam Turbines, GT and ST auxiliaries, and Generators. Support includes but is not limited to continuous improvement, root cause and corrective action activities, Engineering Support Requests (ESRs), Non-conformance Reports (NCRs), improve fleet reliability, availability, and maintainability to reduce long term costs.

The position is intended to be a working manager, balancing technical engineering evaluations and leadership of the service engineering groups.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage a group of engineers, technicians, and interns to provide support to our LTSA and Service Operations business including timely disposition of technical issues through non-conformance reports dispositions and technical evaluations. Field service support coverage must be available 365 days per year.
  • Participate in his/her team personnel development process, including (monthly/quarterly) check-in meetings, annual performance reviews.
  • Lead the team's Tasking and Certification program:
    • Prioritizing training/certification for his/her team members based on team performance regarding first time quality (FTQ) and on-time delivery to commitment date.
    • Identifying and managing the personnel in their team to implement Certification program process, including administration of initial and recurring training of their team members.
  • Create and assign tasks as directed/needed while ensuring assignments are completed with high level of quality and on time to commitment dates.
  • Assume technical responsibility as an Engineering Manager per SOP-OPS-211 for technical activities
  • Advocate for company/departmental initiatives
  • Lead productivity and growth efforts based on initiatives
  • Understand the impacts to business units for reliability, performance, and cost to make thorough engineering evaluations, outlining the risks/impacts for the business to evaluate.
  • Work with LTSA Support group/Parts Planning and configuration engineering to identify service issues and recommend the latest part configurations. Where required, work with Mitsubishi Power's other factories such as Takasago, Hitachi City, Nagasaki, Yokohama, Savannah Machinery Works, etc. to communicate the need to alter designs and work to integrate new designs as quickly as possible to reduce business exposure.
  • The engineering group is responsible for interfacing with Mitsubishi Power Japan Gas Turbine and Steam Turbine Service Engineering in Takasago to obtain the technical requirements to make field dispositions, and as necessary, to assist the Service Engineering group with technical evaluations and field investigations.
  • Publish and Maintain a database where fleet risks can be identified to be used for parts planning, outage planning, and financial planning. Where possible, develop engineering mitigations of the risks.
  • Support of evening or early morning calls with Japan is periodically required to resolve service issues quickly and communicate important findings. Ensure feedback of service issues to TGO Service and Design through the bi-weekly reliability call is performed.ย 
  • Interface with internal project, procurement, manufacturing, transportation and field service departments to achieve programs goals.
  • Prepare customer communications for Incident Reports and Gas Turbine and Steam Turbine Bulletins where Mitsubishi Power has the lead product responsibility.
  • Monitor the condition of parts being returned for service and optimize component design to address service issues.
  • Develop staffing plans balancing staffing for long term internal growth with outsourcing services for specialized skills.
  • Develop the technical skills of group members to support field outages.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Support technical leadership of industry meetings including insurance and lender meetings, user conferences, and industry conferences (PowerGen, ASME Turbo Expo, EPRI, etc.).
  • Ensure fleet experience and feedback is incorporated into design reviews, design meetings, and communicated to the appropriate engineering design personnel.
  • Support ISO 9001 audits and compliance efforts.
  • Some overnight travel (up to 20%) by land and/or air with some trips lasting two or more weeks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EDUCATIONย ย ย 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

      • Education and/or Experience: BS degree in engineering from an accredited college or university; knowledge of gas turbine and steam turbine engineering including overall turbine configuration, turbine design, boundary conditions, temperatures and materials. The preferred candidates will have experience with structural engineering of turbine components and experience with manufacturing processes used within Mitsubishi Power and vendor facilities.
      • Management Skills: Candidate shall have demonstrated management and / or team leadership skills in short term critical path development programs.
      • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as industry reports and technical journals. Ability to write technical reports and correspondence including customer reports. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
      • Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform necessary calculations to satisfy job requirements.
      • Reasoning Ability: Ability to make judgment decisions based on specifications or technical requirements.
      • Computer Skills: advanced computer skills including finite element analysis, spreadsheets, SAP, SharePoint, CRM, Windchill, and general office software such as electronic mail, word processing, Power Point drawings, etc.
