The Role We Want You For

The Senior Project Engineer – Steel Procurement is an advanced, on-site leadership role responsible for overseeing and executing steel procurement logistics, delivery coordination, and material verification across complex or large-scale projects. This position works closely with the Project Manager and Senior Project Manager while serving as a primary on-site authority for steel delivery sequencing, fabrication coordination, and issue resolution.

In addition to performing core Project Engineer responsibilities, the Senior Project Engineer provides mentorship to Project Engineers, leads field-level coordination efforts, proactively resolves complex delivery and fabrication issues, and ensures steel procurement activities align with project schedules, budgets, and quality standards. This role is a critical link between CDC project management, fabrication shops, dispatch teams, and site operations.

The Specifics of the Role

  • Lead daily and weekly steel delivery coordination with Project Managers, Senior Project Managers, fabricators, dispatch teams, and site leadership.
  • Oversee fabrication and delivery schedules to ensure alignment with project sequencing, erection plans, and field constraints.
  • Proactively identify schedule risks, delivery conflicts, or fabrication issues and drive timely resolution.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for steel delivery, logistics, and material sequencing challenges on site.
  • Oversee and perform check-in of all delivered steel materials to verify accuracy, quantity, condition, and completeness against: Bills of lading, shop drawings, shipping lists, project requirements.
  • Lead resolution efforts for missing, damaged, or incorrect materials, coordinating corrective actions with PM/Sr. PM, fabricators, dispatch, and field teams.
  • Maintain and audit delivery logs, material tracking records, and discrepancy documentation to ensure accuracy and traceability.
  • Coordinate directly with fabrication shops regarding material readiness, shipping sequences, production status, and corrective fabrication.
  • Conduct and lead fabrication shop visits as required to verify readiness, sequencing, and quality.
  • Support PMs and SPMs with documentation for change orders, back charges, and corrective fabrication related to steel procurement issues.
  • Serve as the CDC on-site lead coordinating between:
    • Project Manager / Senior Project Manager
    • Steel fabricator
    • Dispatch and logistics teams
    • Field supervision and erection crews
  • Participate in and lead steel-related site meetings focused on sequencing, deliveries, and installation planning.
  • Support field teams by clarifying material locations, delivery timing, installation priorities, and resolution paths for steel-related issues.
  • Mentor and guide Project Engineers on delivery coordination, material verification, and documentation best practices.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to logistics planning, delivery sequencing, material tracking, and site coordination.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of CDC steel procurement field procedures and standards.

Requirements

Education / Experience

  • 2–5 years of experience in construction, project engineering, field engineering, or materials coordination.
  • Strong experience with steel erection, fabrication, logistics, or materials management strongly preferred.
  • Advanced understanding of steel fabrication, shipping, and erection sequencing.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, and bills of material.
  • Proficiency with delivery documentation (BOLs, packing slips, shipping logs).
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills for coordinating across multiple teams.
  • Proactive problem-solving and issue identification.
  • Ability to adapt to changing schedules, site conditions, and project demands.
  • High level of accountability and ownership of responsibilities.
