Job description

JOB SUMMARY

Operations Manager is to handle the day-to-day operations of the project side of the business. Reporting directly to ownership, you will own the daily execution, financial performance, and safety of every active project — directly supervising our Project Managers, Field Superintendents, Truck Drivers, Mechanics and Foremen. This is a senior leadership role built for someone who can bring structure and accountability to a fast-growing company. Keeping jobs on schedule and on budget, developing strong leaders in the field and the office, and serving as the escalation point that resolves routine project issues. Success is measured not just by keeping work moving, but by delivering predictable, profitable results the company can build on.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Operational Leadership

•     Oversee all operational aspects of Maylor's active projects — deep foundations, retaining and earth retention systems, driven pile, drilled shafts, and FDOT-related work — ensuring alignment with company goals for safety, quality, schedule, and profitability.

•     Serve as the primary escalation point for project-related operational issues; solve problems in a way that protects schedule, margin, and client relationships.

•     Establish, standardize, and enforce consistent operational systems, procedures, and best practices across all projects to create repeatable, predictable execution.

•     Run regular operations meetings, job status reviews, and KPI reviews with clear follow-through and accountability across the project teams.

Team Leadership & Development

•     Directly supervise, mentor, and hold accountable the Project Managers, Field Superintendents, and Foremen — set clear expectations and step in to correct course when standards are not met.

•     Recruit, train, develop, and retain a high-performing operations workforce; build bench strength and stronger leadership within the PM and Superintendent team.

•     Conduct performance evaluations, deliver direct feedback, and drive professional development and succession planning across field and project management staff.

•     Foster a collaborative, trust-based, accountable culture that connects the field and the office and reduces day-to-day chaos.

Financial & Project Performance

•     Hold accountability for divisional financial performance — review project budgets, job costing, estimates, and profit margins to protect gross profit and support company net profit.

•     Monitor work-in-progress, revenue forecasts, backlog, and job-level KPIs; identify margin erosion or schedule drift early and drive corrective action.

•     Oversee resource allocation of labor, equipment, and materials across all project sites to optimize utilization, minimize downtime, and eliminate conflicts between jobs.

•     Partner with estimating and the Design Engineer to ensure bids reflect real-world production rates and constructability, and support contract review and negotiation.

Field Oversight, Safety & Compliance

•     Conduct regular field inspections and site audits to monitor progress, enforce safety protocols, and resolve operational challenges in real time.

•     Champion a zero-incident safety culture; ensure full compliance with OSHA, FDOT, and environmental regulations across every site.

•     Ensure projects are executed in accordance with contract documents, plans, specifications, and Maylor's quality standards from mobilization through closeout.

•     Coordinate with PM’s, vendors, subcontractors, and suppliers to streamline logistics, deliveries, and equipment management, reducing delays and cost.

Client & Owner Management

•     Serve as a senior point of contact for owners, engineers, and general contractors — provide proactive operational updates, resolve issues, and ensure contract compliance.

•     Build and maintain strong client relationships that lead to repeat work and represent Maylor professionally in the market.

•     Drive continuous improvement initiatives — process optimization, technology integration, and risk assessment — to enhance overall performance and scalability.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience & Education

•     Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in civil or heavy construction operations, with at least 3 years in a senior operations, general superintendent, or senior project management role directly supervising Project Managers and field leadership.

•     Prior experience as a Project Manager or Senior Project Manager in construction is highly valued — a strong understanding of the PM role is essential to leading and holding the project management team accountable.

•     Familiarity with FDOT and civil construction projects is required; hands-on background in geotechnical, deep foundation, highway, bridge, or heavy civil work strongly preferred.

•     Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent field and leadership experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Knowledge & Technical Skills

•     In-depth knowledge of deep foundation and geotechnical construction methods, equipment, materials, and sequencing specific to foundations, retaining systems, and FDOT work preferred.

•     Proven command of scheduling, buyout, submittals, RFIs, change orders, job costing, billing support, and closeout.

•     Advanced skills in operational planning, budgeting, forecasting, and resource management; experience with construction management software (Bluebeam), CPM scheduling, and ERP or accounting systems.

•     Working knowledge of FDOT project requirements, contract negotiation, and subcontractor/vendor management.

Leadership Competencies

•     Mentor mindset – Every leader at Maylor must be the mentor to his direct reports and want to build them into better people.

•     Accountability builder — sets clear expectations, holds people to them, and escalates problems with solutions, not surprises.

•     Safety-first leader — models and enforces an uncompromising safety standard across every site.

•     Entrepreneurial mindset — takes ownership of business outcomes, prioritizes client and team success, and thrives in a results-oriented environment.

•     Strong communicator and problem-solver — clear and direct with field crews, office staff, ownership, and clients alike, with excellent conflict-resolution skills.

•     Able to work a flexible schedule and travel throughout Florida as project demands require; vehicle allowance provided.
