Job description

JOB SUMMARY

The Water Truck Equipment Operator is a vital member of the paving crew, responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a water truck (typically 2,000–4,000+ gallons) to support asphalt paving, milling, and site preparation. The primary focus of this role is to provide essential moisture for asphalt compaction, fill milling machine reservoirs, and suppress dust to ensure a safe, high-visibility work zone.

The Water Truck Driver is expected to maintain a 'Safety First' mindset, performing thorough equipment inspections and assisting the crew with manual labor or secondary equipment operation (such as skid steers or rollers) during downtime. This role serves as a foundational position for those looking to advance into heavy equipment operations within Martin Marietta’s paving and construction divisions.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate the water truck to dampen roadbeds for compaction and apply controlled water flow to support asphalt rollers, ensuring the mix does not stick to drums.
  • Maintain water levels for milling machines to cool teeth and suppress silica dust; treat haul roads and work areas to maintain optimal visibility and air quality.
  • Coordinate with the Foreman to ensure water is delivered to the right location at the right time, minimizing downtime for the paving train.
  • Safely navigate to and from water sources (hydrants, ponds, or fill stations), following all environmental and local municipal regulations for water usage.
  • Conduct daily safety walk-arounds, checking fluid levels (oil, coolant, fuel), brakes, tires, and the functionality of spray bars and pumps.
  • Perform minor maintenance such as greasing fittings, cleaning spray nozzles, and washing the vehicle exterior/interior to maintain professional appearance and longevity.
  • Strictly adhere to OSHA standards and Martin Marietta’s 'Guardian Angel' safety culture. Report all near-misses, hazards, or mechanical defects to the supervisor immediately.
  • When the truck is not in active use, assist the paving crew with hand tools (shovels, rakes, brooms) for site cleanup, joint preparation, or traffic control support.
  • Under supervision, operate light equipment such as skid steers, plate compactors, or small rollers to assist in the completion of paving projects.
  • Utilize two-way radios or CBs to maintain constant contact with Loader Operators, Foreman, and Haul Truck Drivers to ensure safe traffic flow on-site.
  • Maintain accurate driver logs, including engine hours, water loads delivered, and daily inspection reports.
  • Ensure all Load Documents or water usage permits are signed and filed according to company policy.
