How much do llmsw jobs pay per year?

As of May 29, 2026, the average yearly pay for llmsw in the United States is $72,724.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $55,000.00 and $85,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an LLMSW (Limited Licensed Master Social Worker), and why are they important?

To thrive as an LLMSW, you need a master's degree in social work from an accredited program, foundational knowledge of social work principles, and state licensure. Familiarity with case management software, electronic health records, and documentation systems is commonly required. Strong communication, empathy, cultural competence, and resilience are standout soft skills for building trust and supporting clients facing complex challenges. These skills and qualifications are vital for delivering effective services, maintaining compliance, and fostering positive outcomes for individuals and communities.

What types of clients and cases can an LLMSW expect to work with in their first social work position?

As an LLMSW (Limited Licensed Master Social Worker), you can expect to work with a diverse range of clients depending on your employment setting, such as individuals, families, or groups facing challenges like mental health issues, substance abuse, or family conflict. Early in your career, you may handle intakes, assessments, crisis intervention, and ongoing case management under the supervision of a fully licensed social worker. Collaboration is key; you'll often work as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes counselors, medical professionals, and educators to coordinate care and advocate for clients. This variety not only builds your experience but also helps you identify your preferred practice areas as you work toward full licensure.

What is an LLMSW?

An LLMSW stands for Limited Licensed Master Social Worker. It is a credential granted to individuals who have earned a Master’s degree in social work and have passed the required licensing exam, but are working under supervision towards full licensure. LLMSWs can provide social work services in various settings, such as hospitals, schools, or community organizations, but must be supervised by a fully licensed social worker (LMSW or LCSW). Once they complete the required supervision hours, they can apply for full licensure, which allows for independent practice.

What is the difference between Llmsw vs Licensed Social Worker?

The Llmsw and Licensed Social Worker are closely related, with Llmsw typically representing an entry-level or pre-licensure credential, while Licensed Social Worker indicates full licensure and the ability to practice independently. Both roles work in similar environments and require similar education and supervised experience. The main difference lies in licensure status and scope of practice, with Licensed Social Worker having more autonomy and responsibility.

Job description

Do you have a passion for improving the health of individuals receiving behavioral health services? Would you like to be a valuable member of a diversity driven, mission-minded team that impacts our community? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to work as a full-time (40 hrs/wk) Multisystemic Therapist to work with both delinquent youth using the Standard MST model, and work with sexually offending youth on their Problem Sexual Behavior using the MST-PSB model adaptation.

 Why This Job Is Awesome

  • You will master your clinical skills in the MST model and family/child therapy
  • You work with a great team of co-workers with lots of support and clinical supervision
  • You have flexibility with your schedule to make life work for you and your clients
  • You have generous PTO, holidays, benefits, and the best retirement plans
  • This position qualifies for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program

What You Will Be Doing
Multisystemic Therapy (MST) is an evidence-based practice which utilizes intensive, ecological interventions directed at adolescents and their families, with the collaboration of community-based resources such as caseworkers, probation officers, and school professionals.  Multisystemic Therapy for Problem Sexual Behavior (MST-PSB) is a clinical adaptation of Multisystemic Therapy that is targeted to adolescents who have committed sexual offenses or demonstrated persistent sexual behaviors which present a risk to themselves or others. Both MST and MST-PSB have been proven effective at decreasing problem antisocial behaviors and reducing the need for out-of-home placements for troubled youth.

Working as an MST and MST-PSB Therapist, you will provide model-adherent, intensive, in-home clinical treatment to a diverse population of adolescents with delinquent behaviors and/or problem sexual behavior, along with their families. You will provide confidential and culturally responsive mental health and substance use therapy to diverse youth aged 12-17 who are diagnosed with severe emotional disturbance.  You will demonstrate passion and cultural competence working with racially marginalized families, diverse communities, and LGBTQ youth.  In this position, you will develop and document clear clinical conceptualizations and treatment plans that are individualized and measurable, and developed in collaboration with the client/family and others involved on the care team. You must maintain high accessibility to clients, and commit to a non-traditional but flexible schedule that is based on families’ availability.  Additionally, you will be part of a rotation of on-call shifts and be available after-hours; when on call, you must be able to go to families’ homes quickly after hours as needed.

 What We Require

  • MST Therapist requires a Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling or related field.
  • Licensed Master Social Worker (LLMSW/LMSW) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC/LPC) preferred; Limited License Psychologist (LLP) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LLMFT/LMFT) considered. Clinicians with limited licenses will be considered.
  • A valid Michigan drivers’ license.
  • A minimum of one-year experience in clinical settings working with youth and/or families.

You will have knowledge of the DSM V, co-occurring disorders, substance use disorders, culturally responsive interventions, evidence-based and promising practice interventions. You will possess the ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment.  The ideal candidate will be flexible and adaptive to changes in policies and procedures, assist in meeting outcome measures, and provide excellent clinical service to consumers.  Priority consideration will be given to qualified candidates who are fluent in English and Spanish.
