Job description

The Newscast Director coordinates and executes all technical aspects of live and recorded productions, including daily newscasts, special programming, and remote broadcasts. This position is responsible for directing technical staff, operating production equipment, and ensuring broadcasts are executed accurately, efficiently, and to the station's quality standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the efforts of all technical operators during live newscasts and other live or recorded productions.
  • Direct and oversee technical execution of broadcasts, ensuring accurate timing and smooth transitions.
  • Supervise and assign duties to production personnel engaged in technical control and program production.
  • Observe program content through monitors and provide direction to camera operators and production staff regarding shot composition and execution.
  • Collaborate with producers, anchors, reporters, and technical teams to deliver a clean, accurate, and engaging newscast.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Engineering, Production, and News departments to ensure operational readiness and resolve technical issues.
  • Operate production switchers and other control room equipment during live broadcasts.
  • Direct multiple technical elements simultaneously, including cameras, graphics, audio, playback, and other production sources.
  • Train and mentor camera operators, graphics operators, and other production staff on proper operational procedures and broadcast standards.
  • Test and monitor equipment before broadcasts to ensure proper performance and reliability.
  • Maintain composure and make quick decisions in a fast-paced, live production environment.
  • Adhere to company policies, safety procedures, and industry best practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements & Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Broadcasting, Communications, Television Production, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of television production or news operations experience, preferably in a live news environment.
  • Prior experience directing live newscasts is preferred.
