PURPOSE
Police Recruits that successfully complete the Police Academy will be promoted to a vacant Police Officer position when it becomes available. The Police Officer position has a ten-step pay schedule. The starting pay is Step 1 - $36.51 per hour or $75,940.80 annually (as of 7/01/2026, subject to change).
Incumbents attend, participate, and successfully complete the POST-certified Police Recruit Training Academy prior to being commissioned as a Police Officer.
This is a civilian, limited-term, non-commissioned position assigned only to those individuals who have successfully passed the entry level testing and met all criteria to become commissioned police officers

Conditions of Employment - Incumbents are required to:
  • Maintain physical fitness to meet all required physical standards for Police Recruit throughout the duration of the academy.
  • Wear a uniform and maintain a neat and clean appearance.
  • Meet and maintain qualifications on firearms and other weapons.
  • Upon academy graduation, work any hours, days, or shifts, including holidays and weekends, as assigned and be subject to call-back or overtime requirements, if necessary, for effective operations of a 24/7 facility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must possess and maintain a valid Nevada or "border state" driver's license, as defined by NRS 483.
Must be at least 21 years of age by the date of the first exam for the position.
Must be a Citizen of the United States by the date of the first exam for the position.
Must not be prohibited from possessing a firearm pursuant to any law, including NRS 202.360 or 18 U.S. Code § 921-922.
Must meet all minimum standards for appointment to perform duties of a peace officer under NAC 289.110.

General Physical Requirements All physical and mental conditions sufficient to meet all standards required for successful completion of the entire Police Recruit academy training, including but not limited to shooting a Department-approved firearm; deploying other Department-approved weapons; maintaining Department-approved firearms qualification; and engaging in defensive tactics. Vision sufficient to read the computer screen, as well as fine print in documents. Hearing sufficient to hear, discriminate, localize, and respond accordingly to a variety of speech and environmental sounds in a variety of situations, including face-to-face communications, telephone conversations, or radio communications, in accordance with Department standards. Dexterity and mobility sufficient to perform the following: operate standard police and office equipment; operate motorized vehicles; climb stairs; sprint from one location to another during code response and run for an extended period of time. Agility sufficient to twist, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach forward, jump, and reach overhead. Strength sufficient to subdue and restrain persons and drag, lift, or carry persons or objects. Retirement - 36.75% of your salary provided through the Nevada Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). The City of Boulder City provides an Employer Pay Contribution Plan (EPC). Under this pre-tax plan, the employer pays the PERS contribution on your behalf. Future PERS increases are split between the City and the employee through a salary reduction in lieu of a pay raise.
Holidays - Twelve and a half (12.5) holidays, and one (1) floating holiday per calendar year.
Deferred Compensation Plan - The City offers a 457 Plan, a government deferred compensation plan similar to a 401(k) plan.
Annual Leave - Hours accrued each year:
Date of Hire to one year of eligible employment: 80 Hours
One year of eligible employment to ten consecutive years of eligible employment: 120 hours
Ten consecutive years of eligible employment to fifteen years of eligible employment: 160 hours
More than fifteen consecutive years of eligible employment: 200 hours
Sick Leave - Accrual is at the current rate of 10 (ten) hours per month.
Social Security - Not deducted from your income, as you will belong to the regular Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) with the State of Nevada. Your portion of the Medicare tax will be deducted from your pay, along with federal withholding.
