What are Linux Managers?

Linux Managers are IT professionals responsible for overseeing and maintaining Linux-based systems and servers within an organization. They manage a team of system administrators, ensure system reliability and security, plan upgrades, and implement best practices for Linux environments. Their role often includes troubleshooting complex issues, managing user access, and developing strategies for backups and disaster recovery. Linux Managers also coordinate with other IT departments to support business needs and ensure compliance with company policies.

What are some common challenges faced by Linux Managers when leading a team of system administrators?

Linux Managers often encounter challenges such as balancing daily operational tasks with long-term infrastructure improvements, ensuring consistent security updates across multiple servers, and managing team workloads efficiently. They must also facilitate clear communication between team members and other departments, especially when troubleshooting complex issues or implementing new technologies. Strong leadership, effective delegation, and staying current with evolving Linux distributions and best practices are key to overcoming these challenges and supporting both the team and organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Linux Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Linux Manager, you need deep expertise in Linux system administration, network management, and scripting, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with configuration management tools (like Ansible or Puppet), virtualization platforms, and certifications such as RHCE are highly valuable. Leadership, problem-solving, and strong communication are essential soft skills for managing teams and coordinating complex projects. These skills ensure the secure, efficient, and reliable operation of IT infrastructure while fostering effective collaboration within technical teams.

What is the difference between Linux Manager vs Linux System Administrator?

AspectLinux ManagerLinux System Administrator
CertificationsLinux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC), CompTIA Linux+LPIC, CompTIA Linux+, Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
Work EnvironmentOversees teams, manages Linux infrastructure, strategic planningMaintains, configures, and troubleshoots Linux servers and systems
ResponsibilitiesTeam leadership, project management, system architectureSystem setup, maintenance, user support, security updates
Industry UsageIT companies, data centers, enterprise environmentsIT departments, hosting providers, enterprise networks

While both roles involve Linux systems, a Linux Manager typically oversees teams and strategic initiatives, whereas a Linux System Administrator focuses on day-to-day system maintenance and support. The certifications and work environments often overlap, but their responsibilities differ in scope and leadership level.

Job description

www.offworld.ai

Linux Engineer

Based in Pasadena, CA

OffWorld is a robotics startup working on developing a mobile robotic workforce for heavy industrial jobs on Earth, Moon, asteroids & Mars. OffWorld was founded by an experienced engineering team drawing on decades of tackling formidable engineering challenges at NASA, ESA, NOAA, Maxar Technologies, CERN, Reaction Engines, SAFRAN, Surrey Satellites and Cisco. OffWorld’s first challenge is developing and maturing a modular robotic system for extreme environments on Earth. Our robots will go deeper underground and farthest on Earth than humans can, eliminate the need for humans to work in life-threatening environments in mining, construction, tunneling and other dangerous industries, and dramatically reduce the environmental footprint and cost of operations in key economies on Earth and beyond.

We have designed a modular robotic architecture that focuses on maximizing the commonality and reusability across components for fast deployment and optimization. Our robotic systems combine sensor information, cutting edge classical/machine learning (ML) algorithms and a robotics real-time system platform for control, decision making and execution.

As a Robotics Linux Systems Administrator, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the Linux-based infrastructure that supports our robotics systems. You will collaborate closely with our robotics engineers, software developers, and Dev-ops engineers to ensure seamless integration of hardware and software components. Your primary goal will be to create a stable and efficient Linux environment that enables the smooth operation of our robotic platforms.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Design, configure, and manage Linux-based systems to support robotics platforms, including deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of robot's onboard computers, workstations, and embedded systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand their requirements and provide Linux-based solutions for robotics software development, testing, and deployment.
  • Implement security measures and best practices to protect Linux systems from unauthorized access, data breaches, and other potential threats.
  • Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks, and optimize Linux configurations to ensure the efficient operation of robotic systems.
  • Conduct regular system backups and implement disaster recovery plans to minimize downtime and ensure data integrity.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve Linux-related issues, including hardware failures, software errors, and network connectivity problems.
  • Integrate third-party software and hardware components into the Linux-based robotics systems.
  • Document system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps to ensure knowledge sharing and enable efficient support.

To hit the ground running, you need experience in the following:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience, and a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience as a Linux Systems Administrator, preferably in a robotics or automation-related environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux operating systems, including CentOS, Ubuntu, or Debian.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or Perl for automation and system monitoring.
  • Experience with configuration management tools (e.g., Puppet, Ansible) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Strong knowledge of network and application protocols and their associated security implications (TCP/IP, UDP, SMTP, FTP, HTTP, TLS, SSH, DNS, SD-WAN, etc.).
  • Solid understanding of cybersecurity principles and practices for securing Linux systems.
  • Experience in wireless communications including but not limited to WiFi, Cellular and expanding to 900 MHz, Zigbee, Bluetooth, software-defined radios, frequency-hopping.
  • Strong knowledge of wireless communication concepts (omni directional/directional antennas, MIMO, Mesh, etc.).
  • Knowledge of robotic frameworks, such as ROS (Robot Operating System), is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex system issues effectively.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Proactive mindset with a strong sense of ownership and a passion for delivering high-quality solutions. Team player with a hands-on mentality.

In a nutshell, we offer the:

  • Opportunity to sink your teeth into cutting edge industrial robotics problems
  • Opportunity to contribute to the mission of transforming how we mine on Earth today and how we will one day mine on the Moon, asteroids & Mars
  • Opportunity to work with a kind, brilliant and supportive team
  • Opportunity to join the OffWorld team if
    • You are as crazy-excited about the mission as we are
    • You’ve demonstrated you are The Right Stuff

Our benefits package includes the following:

  • Robust medical plan offerings with 0 to limited paycheck deductions
  • Dental and vision insurance
  • Unlimited Paid Time Off
  • 401K Match
  • Parental Leave

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
