Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 333-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus including at a network of Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary
The Environmental Services Worker II works daily to maintain a clean and organized environment for patients and staff at Eskenazi Health. In addition to various cleaning duties, this position reports the status of tasks completed, communicates areas of improvement to the Environmental Services Supervisor, and is available to respond quickly to patient discharge rooms.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Dry cleans bonnets; cleans and wets carpet and furniture
  • Auto scrubs terrazzo, scrubs ceramic tile, and cleans other floor types following manufacturers recommendations
  • Collects RMW (regulated medical waste) and solid waste; transports to disposal/holding area using prescribed methods and following Infection Control/DOT training process and procedures
  • Responds quickly to patient discharge room cleaning requests, in accordance with departmental policy
  • Keeps supervisor updated on the status of tasks completed; helps co-workers as needed; performs as a team member; provides comments and ideas on how work processes can be improved
  • Follows established break procedures and stays in assigned area
  • Demonstrates thorough, detailed cleaning, and high quality finished products; completes daily work assignments and work orders; communicates areas in need of improvement to supervisor
  • Demonstrates AIDET (a departmental model for customer service) through patient and customer engagement
  • Performs cleaning functions in assigned areas following established schedule, using prescribed methods and the 7-Step Cleaning Procedure
  • Mixes cleaning agents in accordance with oral/written instructions in order to avoid damage to floors, walls, and furnishings; and to prevent harm to self and others
  • Empties and cleans waste receptacle as needed; removes trash and relines baskets
  • Removes soiled linen and delivers to soiled linen chute or soiled linen room; removes linen from beds, cleans and disinfects every inch of the beds, mattresses and bed rails; remakes beds on transfer or discharge; cleans and remakes on-call beds
  • Dusts high horizontal surfaces above shoulder height, including lights, vents, curtain rods, ceiling vents, etc; wipes and disinfects all horizontal surfaces, furniture, window sills, ledges, railings and equipment as specified, using hospital approved cleaning agents
  • Mops and dries floors in rooms, corridors, stairs, elevators and offices; vacuums all carpets as scheduled in assigned area using either an upright or canister vacuum equipped with the (HEPPA) filter
  • Spot cleans walls, cabinet sides, windows, doors and door frames; polishes metal surfaces; polishes metal fixtures and stainless steel; cleans walls, doors, kick-plates and corner guards so everything is free of finger prints and smudges
  • Cleans restroom fixtures including sinks, urinals, toilets, tubs, showers and mirrors; polishes chrome/metal fixtures
  • Keeps janitor closet clean and orderly; does not store personal items in the closet; replenishes supplies in areas as needed (paper towels, toilet paper, soap, hand sanitizer, etc.)
  • Adjusts draperies, shades and blinds; arranges furniture in its proper location; cleans spills observed or upon request; observes and reports needed repairs of equipment, furniture, buildings and fixtures
  • Maintains assigned equipment for cleanliness, safety, organization and infection prevention; submits work order for repairs when needed; sets up cart according to policy
Job Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) required
  • Two years of Environmental Services, janitorial, or customer service experience may be accepted in lieu of high school diploma applies to grandfathered internal only.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, understand and execute written instructions in English
  • Customer service, hospitality, and/or healthcare related experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to lift, push and pull 20 pounds on a regular basis
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to use age appropriate communication skills
  • Ability to work while standing on a ladder
  • Ability to climb stairs
  • Ability to operate various cleaning equipment (i.e., upright and canister vacuum cleaners)
  • Ability to operate furniture-moving equipment such as a desk mover, file cabinet mover, etc.
  • Ability to work mandatory overtime when requested
