Walser Insurance Services Customer Service Representative

Walser Automotive Group

Bloomington, MN • On-site

$40K - $55K/yr

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Retirement, PTO

Job description

For more than 70 years, Walser Automotive Group has put people first: our customers, our employees, and our communities. As a family-owned, family-run company, we've grown to 29 dealerships representing 26 brands across Minnesota, Kansas, and Illinois. We lead with innovation, technology, and a promise to deliver an exceptional experience every time. A portion of every vehicle sold and serviced supports the Walser Foundation, investing in schools, nonprofits, and workforce programs in our communities.
About This Role
Walser Insurance Services is an independent agency, which means we shop your policy across 20+ carriers to find the right fit and make sure you never have to overpay for insurance again. We're growing fast, and we're adding to a small, high-performing team that punches well above its weight.
This is an entry point into insurance. You do not need prior insurance or claims experience. Most of our team was trained from the ground up. What you do need is the ability to learn quickly, stay organized across a lot of moving pieces, and keep your footing when the phone doesn't stop.
This role is fully remote, but you must live in the Twin Cities metro area. The team gets together roughly every other month for team meetings - most are optional, but we ask that you're able to attend in person at least once or twice a year.
What You'll Do
Day to day, you'll be the first voice our customers hear:
  • Answer inbound calls and handle policy changes - adding or removing vehicles, adjusting coverage, updating driver and household information
  • Field billing questions: why a rate changed, how to make a payment, what a renewal looks like
  • Work our cancellation list, following up with customers before a policy lapses
  • Run new business check-ins to collect required documentation - prior insurance, household verification, and other underwriting items
  • Support customers filing claims and help them navigate the carrier process
  • Document every customer interaction thoroughly and accurately
  • Manage return mail, daily logs, and agency spreadsheets

As you build your foundation, the role grows:
  • Quoting new policies across our carrier network
  • Renewal reshops - reviewing a customer's rate at renewal and shopping it against 20+ carriers to find them a better option
  • Writing new policies and conducting household annual reviews
  • Identifying cross-sell opportunities and setting appointments with our life-licensed staff

This progression is the reason we're hiring. As you take on quoting and reshops, it frees the rest of the team to take on more - there's a clear path here, and we promote from within.
What You Bring
  • Customer service experience - call center, retail, hospitality, collections, telecom, or anywhere you've handled volume and difficult conversations
  • Genuine comfort with technology. On a normal day, our team has 20-30 browser tabs open across a dozen different carrier portals. This is the single biggest predictor of who succeeds here
  • Ability to multitask and pivot quickly between systems, customers, and priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong attention to detail in documentation
  • Active MN Property & Casualty license, or the ability to pass the P&C exam within 60 days of hire
  • Uphold Walser's Core Values: Do The Right Thing, Lead By Example, Display Positive Energy, Be Open Minded

We'll get you licensed. If you don't have your P&C license, Walser pays for the coursework and the exam. Prior insurance experience is a nice-to-have, not a requirement.
Who Thrives Here
We'd rather be upfront than have you find out in week three:
  • You're a self-starter. Insurance is a big world and you won't have every answer. The people who do well here research, use carrier resources, and figure it out - then check their work with the team.
  • You're comfortable not knowing. You can tell a customer "great question, let me look into that," get back to them, and keep moving. Waiting for someone to hand you the answer isn't an option at our pace.
  • You have thick skin. Rates change. Claims get denied. People aren't always happy when they call - and you'll still take care of them.
  • You want to help people. Underneath the volume, this job is about making sure someone's family is protected and paying a fair price for it.

Backgrounds that have worked well for us: servers and bartenders, collections, wireless and telecom customer service, and retail sales. If you've thrived in a fast environment where you had to think on your feet, you'll recognize this job.
You'll have a manager who is hands-on and will give you every tool you need - but this is not a hand-holding environment. We learn by jumping in.
What's In It For You
  • Medical, Dental, Vision & HSA/FSA - including Blue Cross Blue Shield coverage and additional wellness benefits
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) - take time to relax, spend with family, or enjoy personal time away
  • Career Growth & Advancement - we promote from within and provide clear career paths, mentorship, and development opportunities
  • Fertility & Adoption Assistance - up to $10,000 in financial assistance for fertility treatments and adoption expenses
  • Life Insurance & 401(k) with Employer Match
  • Paid Clothing Program - twice a year, choose from a hand-curated collection of branded Walser apparel, on us
  • Employee Discounts across products and services
  • Employee Resource Groups - Women of Walser, Drive with Pride, Asian Hmong Alliance, and Veterans at Walser
  • Community Involvement - volunteer opportunities through the Walser Foundation
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) - support for personal and professional challenges
  • Referral Program - earn bonuses for referring talented candidates
