Job description

Job Title: Peer Assisted Learning Services Tutors

Department: Academic Services

Supervisor: Dr. Craig Curty

Starting Rate of Pay: $7.25 an hour

Length of Time: Per Semester

Department Description

Peer Assisted Learning Services (PALS) of High Point University strives to foster the academic growth, learning, and development of all High Point University undergraduate students. The mission of PALS is to provide a supportive environment encouraging intellectual and growth mindset opportunities for students who are both utilizing and providing academic support.

Job Description

Tutors work with undergraduate students with 1000 and 2000 level undergraduate courses promoting critical thinking skills and empowering students to support the reinforcement of learning course material.

Job Location/ Hours Required

The candidate will perform most/all job duties in the 4th floor of Smith Library. Hours may vary depending on the job requirements; however, the total number of hours a student employee may work per week is 20 hours. This position requires up to 20 hours per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Meet with students requesting tutoring on a weekly basis and/or office hours-learning lab responsibilities
  • Complete at a minimum CRLA Level I tutor training
  • Complete and submit Tutor Reports for appointment-based tutoring attendance
  • Use QR Codes for office hours and review session attendance
  • Collaborate with PALS in common disciplines
  • Serve as liaison between students and professor
  • Have two weekly scheduled office hours (if required)
  • Schedule weekly times for appointments
  • Facilitate review sessions for tests, exams, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

Must be considered a HPU student with academic standings including a minimum overall 3.0 GPA and received a grade of "A" or "A-" in the course(s) tutored. Previous tutoring experience is a plus, but not necessary for the position. Will be required to attend 10 hours of CRLA Level 1 Tutor Training sessions.
