Job description

Position Information The purpose of this classification is to assist in providing services to library patrons, supervising the customer service desk, supervising three part-time library technicians and also implementing some programming and outreach. This full-time Library Associate position works 40 hours per week at the busy North Cobb Regional Library located in Kennesaw. The position includes some nights and weekends, with an additional 4 hours (1:00-5:00 p.m.) on scheduled Sundays

This position requires exceptional organizational skills, as well as providing excellent customer service to our patrons, and outstanding interpersonal skills. Essential Functions Provides customer service to library patrons and the public: provides assistance and information related to library programs, services, materials, facilities, equipment, fees, procedures, or other issues; responds to questions and complaints related to library operations; researches problems and initiates problem resolution; greets visitors and directs to areas of library; assists patrons in requesting, selecting, and locating library materials; and researches book titles, book availability, patron records, or related information. May supervise Circulation staff at larger libraries.

Develops and implements library programs and activities in assigned area: designs programming to targeted readership; maintains records of program participation; assists in developing goals and objectives for area of specialty; recommends allocation of financial, staffing, equipment, space, and bibliographic resources necessary to meet goals and objectives; interprets goals, objectives, and policies to the public; and coordinates and oversees arrangement of physical facilities in assigned area. Recommends the selection, retention, and general development of a library collection: selects books, periodicals, and other materials for purchase; prepares order lists for purchase of library materials; reviews donated materials and determines which items to add to collection; and removes outdated, worn, and little-used materials from library collections as needed. Provides computer and reference assistance to library patrons: assists patrons in finding required information; instructs patrons in use of various library systems and resources; suggests appropriate internal and external resources for queries; and conducts formal training, as needed.

Monitors usage of library computers: explains and enforces library rules for use of computers and Internet; performs basic maintenance and troubleshooting of computer systems and library equipment; and coordinates service and repair activities, as needed. Processes inter-library loan requests from patrons and other libraries: verifies and identifies requested materials; receives and processes borrowing requests and incoming material; and completes related documentation. Provides outreach for the branch: visits schools to promote library services and programs; attends meetings of neighborhood organizations and various committees; promotes literacy programs; and initiates and coordinates tours.

Opens and closes library facilities: turns equipment on and off; sets alarm system; and records daily counts pertaining to volume of materials checked out in various categories, amount of fines, number of library cards issued, or number of patrons entering library. Monitors inventory levels of equipment and supplies: initiates requests for new or replacement materials; and recommends the purchase, lease or rental of equipment related to services in assigned area. Performs all duties of subordinate library personnel as needed: provides circulation/information services to patrons; repairs or mends damaged books and materials; re-shelves and locates books and materials; restocks supplies; and performs general tasks related to operation and upkeep of the library.

Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree required; supplemented by two years of experience in library or public services; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Preferred Qualifications Excellent computer skills to assist staff and patrons in downloading eBooks (electronic book) to their personal devices.

Physical Abilities Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds). Sensory Requirements Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
