REPORTS TO: Primary: Director of Buildings and Grounds Secondary: Building Principal

BASIC FUNCTIONS:
The primary purpose of the custodial position is to maintain the physical school facilities in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety at all times for all students, staff, patrons and guests of the school district.
The Custodian shall be responsible for cleaning and related tasks in the maintenance of the building, ground and equipment as delegated by the Principal or Operations Manager.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS / QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School diploma or equivalent. Additional training, experience and mechanical aptitude preferred.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of essential building components and be able to perform critical functions such as security and fire alarm systems in case of an emergency to ensure the safety of students.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills to ensure efficient operation of the building and sufficient mechanical aptitude to conduct basic repairs and maintenance on the building, furnishings and equipment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to operate essential equipment including but not limited to: floor and carpet cleaning equipment, snow removal equipment, gymnasium equipment for sporting events, risers and platforms for musical performances and other equipment that may be required for school and community functions.
  • Computer skills adequate to utilize technology relevant to the position.
  • Must be able to relate positively to students, staff and the general public.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • 12 Month Contract for Full Time Employees
  • The VSCSD Board of Directors establishes hourly wage & work year.
  • A Commercial Driver's License is preferred but not required.

EVALUATION: The Director of Buildings and Grounds evaluates the performance of this job with the Building Principal.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, dumpster area and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  2. Sweeps / vacuums / scrubs floors, empties trash/recyclables, washes chalk/whiteboards and dusts as needed in classrooms on a daily basis during the regular school days,
  3. Cleans and disinfects the restrooms and locker rooms on a daily basis during the regular school days.
  4. Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day to include raising and lowering of flags and placement or removal of traffic control devices as applicable and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
  1. Monitors and regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to insure economical usage of fuel water, and electricity based on direction from administration.
  2. Notifies Building Principal or Director of Maintenance when there are problems or concerns with any of the mechanical or utility systems.
  3. Sets up the gym, cafeteria, library, and other rooms for special events.
  4. Performs snow removal and spreads de-icing material to sidewalks and entryways as needed to maintain safety.
  5. Performs summer cleaning to include: general cleaning of classrooms, hallways, storage areas, lockers and furnishings; carpet cleaning and removal (as needed); painting crew (as assigned), stripping and waxing floors; washing walls and windows; cleaning and replacing uni-vent filters; cleaning vents and light fixtures; other summer cleaning and light maintenance tasks as assigned.
  6. Assists with building security at night, locking doors, checking windows, and turning off appropriate lights.
  7. Performs weekend building security checks and temperature records on refrigerators and freezers as assigned.
  8. Performs minor repairs to chairs, desks, and other furnishings.
  9. Replaces light bulbs, and performs other minor maintenance tasks as assigned.
  10. Assists with testing and evaluation of cleaning products and/or procedures as directed by the Building Principal, Head of Maintenance or Operations Manager.
  11. Upon approval from the Building Principal or Head of Maintenance custodial staff will supervise community service workers or others performing work assignments.
  12. Day Custodian responsible for monthly fire extinguisher and emergency light checks as well as boiler chemical test.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Routinely lift up to 50 pounds (occasionally up to 80 pounds) using proper lifting techniques.
  2. Able to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  3. Able to sit, reach, carry, push, bend body at waist, bend both knees, twist, and stoop while handling items.
  4. Able to read and interpret policies, procedures and employee handbook.
  5. Able to write and record reports utilizing basic computer functions.
  6. Able to answer, communicate, and dial the telephone in a clear, precise voice.
  7. Able to work in confined space such as a storage area, crawl space, under bleachers or utility closet.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  2. Will be required to drive school vehicles, operate floor/carpet cleaning machines, operate snow removal equipment and use other job-related tools and equipment.
  3. May be subject to working with strong solvents or potentially hazardous chemicals.
