This is a Temporary part time position offering 25 hours per week through September 30. The schedule for this opening is:

Monday 8:45am to 1:45pm

Tuesday 8:45am to 1:45pm

Wednesday 8:45am to 1:45pm

Thursday 8:45am to 1:45pm

Friday 9:45am to 2:45pm


Expertise

I perform security duties to provide a pleasant, safe and welcoming environment for the library’s visitors and staff and enforce library behavioral rules in a fair, consistent and objective manner. I patrol the property to ensure facility, grounds and Library materials and assets are kept secure and in safe condition.


Essential Functions, Responsibilities, Knowledge and Skills

  • I make regular rounds to inspect building conditions and monitor surroundings, correct problems or report problems to the proper department, as appropriate.
  • I use various methods for communicating with the public, responding to emergencies, and utilizing problem solving and de-escalation techniques. I respond to immediate needs and assess emergency situations. I follow appropriate procedures according to the specific needs of the situation.
  • I am responsible for opening/closing procedures and securing public doors at appropriate times.
  • I review and maintain daily security log entries including security events/incident reports and actions, lost and found, and assist with maintaining records and preparing reports as required by the Building Services and Security Manager or Assistant Manager.
  • I compose and distribute incident reports, as appropriate, via email and other means. I stay abreast of current suspended or “watch list” individuals. I have the ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail.
  • I assist with meeting room preparations and special events by arranging furniture and equipment and verifying proper arrangement; tests and sets up all necessary audio-visual equipment.
  • I participate in security staff’s shared responsibility for the maintenance of the training and procedures manual and attend various operational and procedural training/reviews.
  • I collect money from various Library locations. I transport and deliver accounted funds for deposit to appropriate banks.
  • I am responsible for transporting various items including parcels, mail, confidential materials and books, within and between library facilities. I may transport assorted mail, board packets, etc. to the post office, board member homes, etc., as directed.
  • I assist patrons and Library staff in various helpful ways, including providing directions and after-hours security.
  • I participate in annual inspections of emergency and safety equipment which are required by state and federal regulations.
  • I read professional materials to keep current with trends in the security field. I participate in departmental and library-provided training and educational programs.
  • I attend and contribute to departmental/unit meetings; take part in special projects and committees as assigned.
  • I perform other functions as assigned to ensure effective and smooth continuity of Library operations.
  • I assist the Manager and Assistant Manager and other Building Services and Security team members as directed. Along with my daily tasks, I may be asked to develop needed expertise in specific service areas and I pursue training and education to meet that goal as well as any other needs as directed by my manager. I may be asked to assist in the training of other employees or to share my expertise with others.
  • I am responsible for communicating ideas, issues, and potential solutions to the managers.
  • I have excellent interpersonal skills, good listening and communication skills while working with a diverse patron base. I am pleasant and tactful in interactions with staff and the public.
  • I have general knowledge of security systems, alarms and elevators.
  • I have the physical ability to handle various security situations.


Requirements:

Required Education/Experience and License/Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; post high school coursework preferred.
  • First aid training and CPR/AED certification required. Option to obtain within 3 months of hire may be considered.
  • Police training/law enforcement or security experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of related safety/security experience required.
  • Valid Indiana Driver’s License required.
  • Specific experience with library systems is helpful.


Supervision Received

Receives general supervision. Follows standard procedures and operates with infrequent functional guidance.

Works independently and normally sets work flow and performance routines. Unusual questions and situations are referred to the supervisor or manager, frequently accompanied with additional information and suggestions for correction.

  • Work has standard vision requirements; frequent speaking, vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Frequently standing, walking, moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, frequently moving from one work site to another. Very infrequent possibility of moving quickly, running.
  • Regularly sitting and performing various repetitive actions and extensive use of keyboards, mice monitors, and varied digital devices, requires using hands, fingers and repetitive motions.
  • Occasionally requires balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and working in awkward positions.
  • Occasional heavy lifting up to 50 lbs. (without assistance); 75 lbs.+ with assistance from co-worker.
  • Frequent exposure to fluctuations in interior/exterior conditions such as noise, temperatures (heating & cooling systems), and changes in weather (rain, wind, ice, snow, etc.).
  • Occasional exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other bodily fluids.
  • Occasional exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as exposure to office/maintenance chemicals (cleaning solutions, glue, paint, etc.) power outages, equipment failures, alarms, bomb threats.
  • Occasional to frequent travel, entering and exiting vehicles, driving, moving, and carrying materials to and from various locations.
