About COA: College of The Albemarle, located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, is the state's first community college, founded in 1961. We strive to transform lives by inspiring and empowering individuals and communities of our seven-county service area. Through our four locations, we provide quality college transfer and career and technical education to residents in northeast North Carolina.
Description This position has been designated as a critical-fill vacancy. Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and the College reserves the right to close the posting and fill the position prior to the stated closing date upon identification of a qualified candidate. Faculty assignments may include classroom, laboratory, clinical, hybrid, online, day, evening, and weekend instruction at any College campus, instructional site, or affiliated clinical location based on program and operational needs.
Limited travel throughout the College's service area and to clinical partners is required. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the College's pre-employment process, verification of credentials, continued funding, enrollment, program needs, and compliance with all applicable regulatory, accreditation, and licensing requirements. Official transcripts and additional credentialing documentation will be required prior to employment. In accordance with applicable state and institutional guidelines, certain positions may be eligible for recruitment, hiring, retention, or other incentive payments. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. This position may be eligible for a market premium of up to ten percent (10%) in addition to the established base salary. The role of the Instructor, Associate Degree Nursing is to provide knowledge in his/her field of expertise and to promote various student-centered learning activities that will stimulate an interest in critical thinking and a desire for life-long learning.
Various teaching strategies, learning styles and delivery methods including new technology systems will be utilized to reach this goal. The Instructor, Associate Degree Nursing is supervised by the Department Chair, Associate Degree Nursing. Examples of Duties Implements college goals as related to instructional area.
Prepares, teaches and evaluates assigned instructional courses (classroom, lab, clinical). Reviews nursing syllabi with the Program Coordinator at the completion of each semester and assists with updates course syllabi to reflect changes. Assists with loading course syllabi and various course documents on MyCourses throughout the semester.
Develops supplemental teaching materials to augment courses. Implements new teaching strategies as appropriate. Evaluates textbooks for relevancy, quality and currency, making recommendations as necessary per established policy.
Maintains accurate records of students' attendance and performance. Submits reports in accurate and timely manner. Participates in development of curriculum course schedule.
Participates in planning to identify needed courses (current and future). Adheres to assigned teaching load/hours. Implements new courses based on evaluation criteria/process.
Makes recommendations for new courses per constraints of common course library and/or NCCCS guidelines. Integrates new technology in instructional delivery methods. Provides basic orientation to online computer programs used throughout the program.
Assists students with obtaining access to various online computer programs. Participates in development, implementation and evaluation of goals and objectives for instructional area of the college. Participates in development, implementation and evaluation of the activities and operations of the instructional area of the college.
Participates in annual review of instructional program. Supplies information/data for the annual department budget based on stated goals. Adheres to/enforces policies and procedures related to academic area.
Integrates teaching methods that are student oriented/student focused. Submits requests for academic labs orders, maintains and requests repairs/replacement for lab equipment/supplies. Maintains a hazard free environment and practices safety in lab(s) or classroom.
Provides guidance and advice to assigned student advisees and registers for semester. Maintains weekly office hours per college guidelines or as designated by off-campus assigned location. Attends advisement workshops and remains current in new technologies regarding registration.
Keeps students advised of their progress in class related to class, lab and clinical. Writes letters of recommendations for students on request if appropriate. Assists students with forming resumes during their last semester.
Participates in student recruitment activities. Incorporates retention strategies to encourage students to stay in programs and refers students to the Health Science Admission and Retention Specialist as needed. Stays abreast of new developments and changes in academic field.
Participates in professional development, as appropriate, as related to: instructional area; new teaching methods; new technology; and professional organizations - locally, statewide and nationally. Requests funding necessary to participate in professional development activities. Assists with faculty recruitment, orientation and mentoring.
Participates in activities that enhance the college mission. Serves on college's standing committees and ad hoc committees as requested. Serves as advisor to student clubs or organizations as appropriate.
Participates in administrative activities related to student admissions, progression, and graduation, as requested. Adheres to college's policies and procedures. Reviews and makes certain that student's immunization records are up to date year-round.
Reviews Graduation Check sheets to ensure progression within the program. Performs other duties as assigned. Unique: Adheres to the policies/guidelines in the Nursing Programs handbooks.
Attends an annual training session on Bloodborne Pathogens and the Nursing Program's Exposure Control Plan. Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of the Systematic Evaluation Plan and Self Study Document of the accreditation agency. Participates in the recruitment, admission and selection of applicants to the nursing program.
Works with the HSWP Admissions and Advising Director in reviewing the files of eligible Associate Degree Nursing applicants to validate accuracy of admission data. Assists with the Associate Degree Nursing Pre-Admission meeting, as well as the Nursing Student Orientation. Assists the Department Chair with the Associate Degree Nursing ranking process.
Maintains competency in theoretical knowledge and clinical skills pertaining to areas of nursing instruction, acquiring the required amount of Continuing Education as stated by the North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON). Performs inventory of lab supplies on a regular basis and orders supplies as needed. Organizes lab supplies, equipment, and manikins.
Communicates with the hospitals in order to receive old or outdated supplies which can be used in the lab setting. Assists with the maintenance of various medical equipment in the lab setting. Develops and organizes lab simulations including timeline, materials needed, facilitators to run simulation, etc.
Gives prompt feedback during lab simulation. Assists with developing a "plan of improvement" when a student is not satisfactory in lab. Incorporates lecture with "hands on" experience in the lab.
Encourages health care practitioners to play a part in simulation in order to enhance student learning. Communicates with students via MyCourses regarding upcoming lab simulations so that students come prepared (uploading simulation forms, checksheets, required reading prior to simulation). Collaborates with other community colleges regarding their lab learning styles via simulation.
Keeps informed on current and upcoming lab simulation practices. Maintains a safe learning environment within the lab. Develops forms to be used in the clinical setting reflecting lab experiences.
Participates in the selection and evaluation of clinical learning resources. Establishes cooperative relationships with staff at clinical agencies. Communicates to staff at clinical agencies regarding objectives for student learning experiences and schedule of clinical assignments.
Reviews the Nursing Student Handbook and Clinical Expectations with students prior to their clinical rotation. Supervises students within the clinical setting. Responsible for patient care provided by the student during clinical.
Reviews each student's documentation during clinical and makes corrections as needed. Ensures patient and student safety at all times during clinical. Collaborates with clinical agencies to provide a general orientation for students.
Provides orientation to the clinical unit within the agency. Presents a computer orientation to the clinical agency documentation system for students. Collaborates with various units and departments within the hospital setting to allow observation for students (i.e., Emergency Department, Operating Room, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Nursery)
Interacts with clinical agency staff to encourage optimal student learning. Reviews each student's clinical paperwork on a weekly basis and provides feedback. Corresponds with clinical agencies in preparation of clinical rotations, including criminal background checks, drug screens, and immunizations.
Oversees medication administration within the clinical setting. Ensures students know the Associate Degree Nursing's Scope of Practice and act within that scope during clinical. May provide orientation materials for the preceptor including orientation packet, preceptor responsibilities, student responsibilities, instructor contact information.
Informs students of their progress regarding classroom/lab expectations and clinical expectations. Provides current clinical rotation schedule to appropriate persons. Shares student/faculty evaluation of clinical evaluation of clinical facility with appropriate clinical personnel.
Assists with a final pinning ceremony. Typical Qualifications Required: Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from a regionally accredited college or university OR a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from a regionally accredited college or university and currently enrolled in a regionally accredited Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program. Current, unrestricted license as a registered nurse in North Carolina (or Virginia, if instructor will be supervising students on clinical affiliation in Virginia).
Two calendar years of prior full-time employment or equivalent in clinical nursing practice as a registered nurse. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required: Knowledge of the community college system and a commitment to its mission. Knowledge of COA's mission and a commitment to it.
