Job description

The Design Engineer is responsible for designing product, material specifications, design documentation and may be involved in developing new products for any SRP division.
Must be familiar with design procedures and a variety of manufacturing processes such as plastic molding and metal fabrication. Ability to design using computer aided, CAD, 3D, preferred Solidworks. Assures compliance with design and manufacturing requirements, federal guidelines and customer requirements. Assignments require the investigation of a limited number of variables and supervisory assistance is provided on unusual problems. May coordinate the work of designers and other technical support personnel.
This position requires initiative; will work independently and the associate must possess a strong desire to learn. This engineering position could include project management and must have ability to perform assigned task with minimum direction.
This position requires professional and prudent communications both internally and externally working in a team environment with a diverse group of associates, customers, suppliers, and subcontractors.
Job may require light traveling to visit sites, overtime and a flexible schedule, reporting early and working late including weekends from time to time. After a training period the position may be a hybrid position of office and remote for standard work weeks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Creating 2D, 3D models of assemblies, BOM's, and shop drawings using Solidworks or CAD software
  • Building and testing prototypes, working with contractors or vendors as needed
  • Assisting with materials pricing, vendor selection, and project estimating
  • Evaluating current designs for cost-cutting and implementing easier or more efficient manufacturing methods (Value Engineering)
  • Performing calculations to support proper material sizing and selection
  • Performs analysis of designs to ensure that all internal and external standards are met including calculations, forces and loads.
  • Maintains all complete bill of materials in the company ERP system
  • Assist in developing and maintaining company design standards to streamline the engineering process for each project

Education and/or Experience
Engineering degree is required (BSME, BS MET, or Civil/structural background preferred)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in an Engineering / Design position
  • Required: The applicant must have 2D and 3D modeling experience, with a minimum 500 hours plus using Solidworks. Pro-E, Inventor, AutoCAD or similar experience also helpful.
  • Required: Experience in creating shop drawings, working with document libraries, knowledge of welding and metal fabrication. Experience with Microsoft Word & Excel is required.
  • Must be "hands-on" willing to spend time in the manufacturing or prototyping areas
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population of disciplines including factory workers, supervisors, managers and customer
  • Experience in any of the following areas is a plus: roto-molded plastics design, New Product Development (research, design, specification, procurement, documentation), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), machine design
  • Desired but not essential: ability to perform structural analyses on steel frame structures, familiarity with building codes, familiarity with ASTM standards, aluminum casting design, experience using a Product Data Management library and ERP system

Computer Skills
  • Must be proficient in computer software for design work and layouts including Solid Works or another 3D design suite.
  • Must be able to utilize computer software programs for creating reports, presentations, etc.
  • Must be able to utilize 2-D and 3-D computer modeling techniques for new product design
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
