POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Libraries at the University of Washington invites applications for a librarian position at the rank of Senior Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian, with an anticipated start date of October 2026. We seek applicants who demonstrate commitment to excellence in teaching and service in a diverse and inclusive academic community. The successful candidate will join the libraries on a full-time basis beginning this fall quarter. UW Librarians have an annual service period of 12 months (July 1 - June 30).
The base salary ranges for this position will be $6,710-$7,360 per month (at the rank of Senior Assistant Librarian), and $7,450-$8,080 per month (at the rank of Associate Librarian), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include a moving allowance.

RESEARCH AND LEARNING SERVICES
Research and Learning Services (RLS) provides user-centered services to the UW Community through support for research, teaching, and learning. Composed of eight departments (Access Services, Assessment, Communications, Facilities, Data Services, Sciences, & Health Sciences, Open Scholarship & Publishing and Arts & Humanities, Learning Services & Social Sciences, and Tateuchi East Asia Library), the portfolio provides public-facing and infrastructural services to advance the mission of the University and the Libraries strategic goals. Units work collaboratively to build integrated services and spaces across multiple Seattle Campus Libraries.
Health Sciences Library
The Health Sciences Library (HSL) is a national leader in the development and application of innovative strategies and technologies to meet information and research needs for the benefit of communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. The HSL supports the education, research, and clinical programs of the UW's six health sciences schools (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and Social Work), the UW Medicine Accountable Care Network (ACN), and the wider interdisciplinary biomedical community of the University. The UW Medicine ACN spans 46 cities and neighborhoods and includes 1,000+ primary care providers; 4,000+ specialists; 1,000+ clinics; 19 hospitals; 33+ urgent care clinics; and 19 emergency departments.
The Clinical Research and Data Services team at HSL is part of the Libraries' Data Services, Sciences and Health Sciences (DSSHS) unit, which provides leadership, strategic vision, and oversight for data services, support for the sciences and health sciences, and the Health Sciences Library. This role will work closely with Learning Services & Social Sciences and other RLS departments to ensure alignment across curriculum integration initiatives.
School of Public Health
The UW School of Public Health includes graduate and undergraduate departments, interdisciplinary programs, and multiple centers and institutes focused on solving our greatest public health challenges and co-creating health equity with communities in the region and the world.
THE POSITION
The Public Health and Health Sciences Strategy Librarian will join the Clinical Research & Data Services (CRDS) team in providing research and teaching support to the School of Public Health and other Health Sciences Library-supported entities. Reporting directly to the Senior Director, DSSHS, this position assists with the development of scalable, sustainable instructional and research services. The position will collaborate with RLS colleagues to identify programmatic strategies for services, including providing curriculum design coordination for DSSHS librarians and serving as an active member of the Data Services Team to integrate data support into HSL service models.
This position is not tenure eligible. This position is represented by SEIU 925 - Libraries. Please see the SEIU 925 UW Libraries 2026-2029 CBA for the Librarian promotion process.
This position is eligible for hybrid work (on campus and remote).
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Public Health Liaison
  • Provides research support to and fosters relationships with students, faculty, and staff in the School of Public Health and departments affiliated with the School of Public Health.
  • Provides individual and group consultations in research strategies, searching, information management, and tools for evidence-based practice.
  • Develops and maintains expert searching skills in order to conduct complex literature searches.
  • Provides liaison services to other departments and schools as requested.
  • Actively participates in CRDS and DSSHS meetings, contributing to service, projects, and enhancements.

Health Sciences Strategy
  • Under the direction of the DSSHS Senior Director and in collaboration with CRDS and others, assists in defining Health Sciences service models for teaching, learning, research, and clinical care.
  • Coordinates with DSSHS librarians, faculty, and Libraries colleagues to design effective curricular approaches to instruction across departments and supports development of instructional and assessment materials.
  • Cultivates and sustains collaborative relationships in support of the University educational mission.
  • Advocates for HSL integration into curriculum renewal and interprofessional education programs.
  • Serves as HSL liaison to the Data Services Team and assists Senior Director in building DSSHS capacity for support in data and related research needs. Stays abreast of developments in health-related data access, collections, and research.
  • Collaborates with Data Services and IT teams to support emerging uses of AI in research and teaching.

Libraries-wide
  • Maintains a broad understanding of the Libraries Strategic Plan, operations, policies, priorities, and objectives. Assists in the development and achievement of these by participating in Libraries initiatives, committees, task forces, teams, and program planning as appropriate.
  • Plays an active role in participating in Libraries and Research & Learning Services activities and meetings and communicates effectively with coworkers and supervisors. Abides by the Libraries Personal Communication Responsibility Guidelines.

Position will be at rank of Senior Assistant or Associate Librarian, depending on qualifications and background. BENEFITS
Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the UW Retirement Plan (UWRP) or the state's Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) Plan 3. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 26 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax. Appointees solely employed and paid directly by a non-UW entity are not UW employees and are not eligible for UW or Washington State employee benefits.

Qualifications
Required
  • Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.
  • At least two years of post-MLIS librarian experience.
  • At least three years of curriculum design experience, including development of instructional and assessment materials for multi-modal learning.
  • Experience in creating and assessing scalable, sustainable, and programmatic service models for research and instruction in research, educational and/or clinical care settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to align services with broader organizational priorities.
  • Strong public service orientation with an aptitude for providing online and face-to-face instruction and consultation services.
  • Experience using health sciences information resources to provide instruction and research support.
  • Demonstrated experience building productive working relationships across organizational boundaries.
  • Ability to work constructively and flexibly in evolving team and organizational environments.
  • Strong facilitation, communication, and relationship-building skills.
Preferred
  • Familiarity with interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Understanding of current issues surrounding scholarly communication, open access publishing, and data management.
  • Awareness of trends in the federal data management landscape.
