Position Summary and Purpose
The System Director, Risk Management is responsible for promoting an environment of risk awareness and risk reduction, supervision of risk directors and managers, management of liability claims, including consulting with experts, attorneys, excess insurance carrier, and claimants. Actively participates in alternative dispute resolution; Directs facility risk awareness and risk reduction program, including loss prevention and loss control measures, analysis of trending concerns, risk reduction education; Assists in purchase and reserve setting of all lines of insurance coverage for UofL Health; Assists in development and education of system safety and risk management policies and procedures; Participates in sentinel event root cause analysis process; Assists Chief Legal Officer in developing strategic initiatives for organizational growth.
Essential Functions:
• Develops, implements and directs system-wide risk management program, including loss prevention and loss control measures; overseeing the investigation, documentation and assessment of all actual and potential liability risk exposures for the system
• Reviews trends in occurrence reporting data and reporting; reports to hospital administration and legal counsel, as needed, regarding risk management program, trends, and current issues
• Oversees development and education of system safety and risk management policies and procedures; develops, presents and evaluates educational programs relating to risk management theory, current issues, and incident prevention
• Participates in investigations of sentinel events and the root cause analysis process
• Coordinates and oversees the completion of interrogatories, document productions and other discovery requests for professional, general and employment practices liability claims
• Oversees purchase and reserve setting of all lines of insurance coverage for the system
• Works with insurance underwriters and brokers with placement, maintenance, and renewal of all lines of insurance coverage, except workers' compensation
• Oversees the management of workers compensation program for the system and related employee claims
Other Functions:
• Participates in various other special projects related to protecting the health system against liability claims
• Serves as a resource to physicians, administrators, nursing personnel and other hospital departmental personnel
• Participates in developing and interpreting appropriate risk management policies, procedures, and techniques
• Assists the System VP Compliance & Audit with all federal, state and local health care regulations and standards compliance.
• Develop and review risk policies.
• Assist System VP, Quality and Patient Safety as needed in patient safety education and standards.
• Serves on the Emergency Preparedness Committee and monitors activity of all safety subcommittees
• Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct
• Serves as a resource to physicians, administrators, nursing personnel and other hospital and personnel
• Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
• Serves as a member of the system's professional malpractice carrier's Underwriting Committee
• Serves as a member of the system's professional malpractice carrier's Claims Committee
• Attend mediation and trials as necessary.

• Minimum of 10 years of risk management, claims management, litigation and insurance experience (required)

• Kentucky bar admission (preferred)
Certification:
• Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Certified Healthcare Environmental Manager (HEM) (preferred)
