Job Summary:
Under the direct supervision and mentorship of members of the Component Engineering Staff, the Component Engineering Intern undertakes a variety of on-going activities and assigned projects at varying levels of professional complexity requiring knowledge within an area of specialty and/or engineering college major. The Component Engineering Intern works as a member of the Component Engineering team in support of contracted tasks including modeling, analysis, fabrication, and test activities.
The Component Engineering Intern will interact directly with multidiscipline professionals in the planning and implementation of assigned projects. The Component Engineering Internship is a developmental position and is restricted to 3rd or 4th year college students whose major and personal interests are aligned with the role of the engineering organization and hiring department. It is a goal of the internship program to expose the student to the technical business environment to better prepare the student to make informed continued education and career decisions.
Responsibilities and Tasks:
  • Participate in technical projects and programs designed to develop both personal and professional skills aligned with the needs of the Engineering Department.
  • Support day to day engineering operations through tasks related to your specific area of study. Typical assignments may include:
  • System and subsystem analysis and requirements specification
      • Component Lifecycle Management
      • Collecting component data, performing initial analysis, and preparing engineering summaries, enabling senior engineers to focus on higher-complexity decisions.
      • Assist with part library maintenance, attribute updates, and cross-referencing, improving data accuracy
      • Perform DMS reports and reducing turnaround times for design teams.
      • Conducting component research and investigations with suppliers and subcontractors
      • Contribute to automating routine tasks, organizing documentation, and improving internal workflows that increase group efficiency
      • Creating technical documentation
      • Supporting software development or scripting tasks
  • Collaborate with colleagues and other internal or external partners in planning assignments and completing project deliverables.
  • Conduct research and prepare written reports that include findings, recommendations, and alternative solutions as appropriate.
  • Participate, along with other interns, in delivering a final presentation to Executive Staff summarizing the internship experience and highlighting at least one completed project.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, License, or Certification:
  • High school diploma and current enrollment in an accredited Bachelor's degree program in a technical discipline.
  • Completion of at least 2-3 years of coursework toward an Electrical Engineering degree preferred.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply logical and scientific methods to technical problem solving.
  • Flexibility to manage multiple priorities and work for short to moderate periods without direct supervision.
  • Basic computer proficiency; familiarity with standard shop tools, lab equipment, or machine tools is a plus.
  • Foundational understanding of electrical, mechanical, optical, and/or software engineering principles.
  • Technical writing and documentation skills.
