Job description

Job Summary The Grand Prairie City Attorney's Office is seeking a 3L law student or recent law school graduate who is interested in an opportunity to learn and work with a local government entity. Under the supervision of the Deputy City Attorney and the Lead Municipal Prosecutor, the intern will assist the City Attorney's Office in prosecution of criminal Class "C" misdemeanor cases in the City's Municipal Court. Specifically, the intern will assist the Prosecutor's Office with preparation of cases for Class "C" criminal and civil code violations in the City's Municipal Court, including both bench and jury trials, preparing for and handling pretrial conferences, plea agreements, preparation of motions, and other legal documents.

In addition, the intern will assist with reviewing reports, preparing complaints, and assisting with interviewing and preparing witnesses for trial. In addition, the Legal Intern will conduct legal research, draft legal memoranda, and assist with ongoing projects regarding various issues that affect local governments, as needed and assigned. Preferably, the Legal Intern would qualify for a Supervised Practice Card under the Rules Governing the Supervised Practice of Law by Qualified Law Students and Qualified Unlicensed Law School Graduates in Texas.** Essential Job Functions The intern should possess excellent legal research, writing, and communication skills and have the ability to analyze complex legal issues

Familiarity with criminal law and a demonstrated interest in trial work is preferred, but not required. Interns should be able to commit 16-20 hours per week on site. Attendance at some evening meetings may be required.

The City strives to provide our interns with an exceptional work environment that provides the opportunity to gain exposure to real-world matters covering a variety of legal topics. Compensation: $23.50 per hour (maximum of 440 hours per semester) Minimum Qualifications 2L or 3L student currently enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school or recent graduate of an ABA-accredited law school Preferred Qualifications: Eligibility to obtain supervised practice card in accordance with the Texas Rules Governing the Supervised Practice of Law.
