Canopy Counsel - Position Overview:
  • Canopy Counsel provides legal support and guidance to the Organization. Canopy Counsel is responsible for overseeing and performing corporate legal functions. Duties are performed in accordance with established professional policies, practices, regulatory requirements, and accrediting body standards. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: transactional and regulatory work with focus on contracts; research and writing, providing education and guidance, advocacy, workplace investigations; and providing legal counsel and representation to Canopy Children's Solutions.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in social sciences preferred. Juris Doctorate from accredited school of law and licensed to practice in the State of Mississippi.
  • Minimum five (5) years practicing transactional, regulatory, domestic, civil and healthcare law preferred.
  • Must possess knowledge of health care standards and educational regulations.
  • Legal and regulatory research and writing skills required. Excellent writing, verbal and interpersonal skills required.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Excellent team building and interpersonal social skills required.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Report to and work with the Canopy Legal and Responsibility Office in the operation of the Canopy Legal Department.
  • Provide guidance and legal counsel to Canopy Children's Solutions on a variety of issues including but not limited to, legal rights/obligations, risk management, personnel, interpretation of laws, rulings and regulations.
  • Perform transactional work including drafting, reviewing, negotiating and processing contracts, grants, leases, business associate agreements and other binding agreements.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis of authoritative materials, including legal decisions, legislation, and regulation.
  • Prepare documentation and/or digests as indicated in regard to relevant principles and points of law.
  • Oversees the systmes for receiving, processing, documenting, tracking, and acting on all legal functions and requirements.
  • Represent Organization, when appropriate, in court and before administrative agencies/government.
  • Initiate investigations based on grievances, hotline reports, incident reports, allegations and claims associated with Canopy Children's Solutions.
  • Collaborate and assist with duties of the Investigation Security Manager to confirm that allegations, incidents and grievances are investigated and reported properly.
  • Supervise and oversee the duties of the Paralegal to facilitate consistent tracking of transactional work.
  • Review and consult in conjunction with the negotiation, drafting, execution, and tracking of agreements, contracts, leases and other binding legal documents.
  • Retain and work with outside counsel as indicated.
  • Perform or conduct the oversight of various special projects as assigned.
  • Participate in legal capacity for the organizational structure.
  • Function appropriately for special projects as indicated.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
