Assistant or Associate Professor of Accounting โ€“ Tenure Track

Job Description

The School of Accountancy in the W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track position as Assistant or Associate Professor of Accounting, beginning August 8, 2027.

The successful candidate will have an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of accounting education and research at Wichita State University. The position will play an important role in advancing the School of Accountancy, strengthening partnerships with the accounting profession and broader business community, and contributing to the development of innovative academic and applied-learning initiatives that respond to the evolving needs of the accounting profession.

The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and Master of Accountancy (MAcc) programs that prepare students for successful careers in public accounting, industry, government, and nonprofit organizations. The candidate will join a collaborative academic environment committed to excellence in teaching, impactful scholarship, student success, and meaningful engagement with employers and the accounting profession.

Barton School of Business at Wichita State University places applied learning at the center of student experience. Every degree program at Wichita State includes a guaranteed applied learning or research experience, providing students with opportunities to develop relevant professional skills and meaningful experience before graduation. The successful candidate will have opportunities to integrate these experiences into accounting education through industry-engaged projects, experiential learning, research, internships, and partnerships with the regional business and accounting community.

Position Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Teaching: Teach two courses per semester (four courses per academic year) in the School of Accountancy at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with courses offered in in-person, hybrid, and online formats. Teaching assignments will be based on the candidate's expertise and program needs and may include courses across a broad range of accounting disciplines. The successful candidate will also contribute to curriculum development, assessment, continuous improvement, and the advising and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Applied Learning and Professional Engagement: Incorporate applied and experiential learning into course design and develop meaningful opportunities for students to engage with the accounting profession and broader business community through applied projects, case studies, employer engagement, internships, professional organizations, and other experiential learning activities.
  • Research: Develop and maintain an active and sustainable research program consistent with AACSB Scholarly Academic (SA) expectations and the requirements for tenure and promotion at the Barton School of Business. The successful candidate will be expected to produce high-quality scholarly research with the potential for publication in respected and leading journals in accounting or closely related fields and to disseminate research through appropriate academic and professional venues. Collaborate with faculty colleagues, students, and external partners on scholarly initiatives when appropriate.
  • Service and Engagement: Contribute meaningful service to the School of Accountancy, Barton School of Business, university, profession, and broader community. Service may include participation in committees, accreditation and curriculum assessment, student mentoring, student recruitment and retention initiatives, professional organizations, employer partnerships, advisory activities, community outreach, and other activities that advance the mission of the School and Barton School.

The successful candidate will join the School of Accountancy at the W. Frank Barton School of Business. The School of Accountancy holds AACSB accreditation and offers undergraduate and Master of Accountancy (MAcc) programs and maintains strong connections with employers and the accounting profession, creating opportunities for applied learning, professional engagement, interdisciplinary teaching, research, and collaboration. Our faculty are committed to excellence in teaching, impactful scholarship, and meaningful engagement with the accounting profession.

The Barton School is housed in Wayne and Kay Woolsey Hall, a state-of-the-art, 125,000-square-foot facility located on Wichita State University's Innovation Campus. The Innovation Campus creates a distinctive environment where students, faculty, and industry interact in close proximity. Required Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • Earned doctorate (Ph.D., D.B.A., or equivalent terminal degree) in Accounting or a closely related field. Applicants who are at an advanced stage of their doctoral studies (ABD) will be considered if they provide strong evidence that all degree requirements will be completed prior to the effective date of appointment. Evidence of an established record of scholarly research or a strong research pipeline with demonstrated potential for sustained publication in high-quality accounting or related academic journals consistent with the expectations of an AACSB-accredited institution.
  • Evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, effective teaching in accounting or related areas at the university level. Evidence may include teaching evaluations, course development, applied-learning activities, instructional technologies or software, experience with multiple instructional delivery formats, or other indicators of teaching effectiveness.
  • Strong written, interpersonal, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate one or more of the following:

  • Doctoral degree completed or in progress at an AACSB-accredited institution.
  • Professional certification, such as a CPA, and/or significant professional accounting experience.
  • Record of scholarly publications or demonstrated potential for sustained scholarly productivity.
  • Experience incorporating emerging technologies, analytics, artificial intelligence, or related innovations into accounting education or research.
  • Potential to pursue externally funded or industry-supported research.
  • Experience with applied learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, or meaningful engagement with the accounting profession.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor students and contribute to student success.
