The GeauxTeach Master Teacher is a 10-month, full-time teaching and staff position in the LSU College of Science GeauxTeach Program. The Master Teacher teaches and supervises candidates in GeauxTeach courses, field experiences, and teacher residency. Special responsibilities of this hire include developing induction support systems for recent graduates and developing a program to sustain and expand alumni relations.


The successful candidate will have strong mathematics content knowledge, substantial experience in secondary STEM teaching, and a demonstrated commitment to evidence-based teaching and learning. The candidate will also demonstrate the ability to work productively with pre-service teachers and alumni, with LSU faculty and staff in the College of Science and the College of Human Sciences & Education, and with school and district administrators. Recognizing that effective teacher mentoring and professional growth occur within a broader community of support, the position will cultivate networks and partnerships that sustain teachers through preparation, induction, and beyond.


Job Responsibilites:

30% Teacher Residency Supervision and Candidate Support:

Mentor and supervise pre-service teachers during teacher residency; conduct observations and conferences; collaborate with university supervisors and school personnel; and provide individualized support to promote candidate success.


30% Induction Program Development and Support for Beginning Teachers:

Develop, coordinate, and continuously improve evidence-based systems of induction support for recent graduates; facilitate mentoring relationships and professional learning opportunities; and cultivate a community of practice that supports teachers through the transition into professional practice.


20% Teaching Gateway Course (SCI 2012) and Related Field Experiences:

Introduce students to STEM teaching, foster early teaching experiences, and support the recruitment and development of prospective GeauxTeach candidates.


15% Alumni Relations and School, District, and Community Partnerships:

Maintain strong relationships with alumni; develop partnerships with schools, districts, and community organizations; and strengthen the professional networks that support GeauxTeach candidates and graduates.


5% Other:

Attend conferences, contribute to grant-related work or other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Projects


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in mathematics or related field or MNS or MAT with a specialization in math.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a certified secondary mathematics teacher.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching secondary mathematics and supporting the learning and development of students and teachers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in mathematics.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a certified secondary mathematics teacher.
  • Experience teaching advanced secondary mathematics courses, including AP, IB, or Dual Enrollment.
  • Experience supervising teacher candidates or mentoring beginning teachers.
  • Experience designing and directing evidence-based professional development for mathematics teachers.
  • Evidence of leadership in curriculum development or educational improvement.

Additional Information:

Master Teachers are accomplished teachers, mentors, leaders, writers, and presenters. They are knowledgeable about current research on mathematics teaching and learning and understand the challenges faced by pre-service and early-career teachers. A successful Master Teacher demonstrates deep mathematical content knowledge and pedagogical expertise, as evidenced by a record of effective secondary mathematics instruction, including the use of evidence-based and inquiry-oriented approaches. The position requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop productive relationships with teacher candidates, alumni, university faculty and staff, and school and district personnel. Day travel to local schools and districts to observe teacher candidates and support program activities is required.

  • Vehicle Operation - University employees whose principal responsibilities of employment include operating a vehicle, performing maintenance on a vehicle, or supervising any public employee who operates or maintains a vehicle and positions with an expectation to travel will require an MVR and are subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04.
  • Minor Contact - This position and/or position's responsibilities require work directly with minors. Finger printing and National Sex Offender Registry check required per FASOP HR-04.
  • FERPA - As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
