Job description

The Early Childhood Assistant Teacher, Float supports the supervising teacher in implementing instructional and assessment activities. This role uses effective academic social emotional and behavioral strategies to promote student engagement and success while helping maintain a positive, safe and structured classroom environment. The position supports classroom operations by assisting with instruction, supervision, classroom management and behavioral protocol implementation. Responsibilities also include supporting student engagement through curricular and extracurricular activities, communicating professionally in accordance with program guidelines, participating in ongoing training and professional development, assisting with the integration of technology into instructional and classroom activities, providing administrative support and assisting with meal preparation and food service operations in compliance with health and safety standards.

The Early Learning Classrooms at Kennedy Krieger is a unique learning center that aims to provide a comprehensive and family-centered education to children aged 3 to 5.

Our classrooms are located in the Windsor Mill area of western Baltimore County. We provide an inclusive environment where both typically developing children and children who are neurodiverse can learn together.


  1. Assist PreK Lead Teacher in implementation, instruction and assessment activities using effective academic, social emotional, and behavioral strategies to support student success.
  2. Support classroom operations and instructional delivery by completing duties as assigned by supervising teachers and program leadership.
  3. Provide instruction, supervision, classroom management support, and coverage under the direction of the supervising teacher, ensuring a positive, safe, and structured learning environment.
  4. Implement behavioral protocols and classroom assignments during both instructional and non-instructional times.
  5. Utilize instructional and non-instructional time effectively and professionally, while adhering to establish program and administrative guidelines.
  6. Assist with meal preparation, food distribution, and food service operations, ensuring compliance with all health, safety, and sanitation guidelines.
  7. Maintain cleanliness and organization of food preparation and service areas, adhering to proper food handling, storage, and sanitation procedures.
  8. Participate in and contribute to staff meeting, in-service training, and professional development activities.
  9. Support and help facilitate curricular and extra-curricular activities that support student-life, engagement, and promote a positive school culture.
  10. Assist in integrating technology into instruction and classroom activities, in accordance with supervising teacher’s directions and program requirements.
  11. Perform administrative support duties and operational tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must possess and maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • Must possess or be eligible to obtain the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) 90-Hour Preschool Training Certification (Infant/Toddler, Preschool, or School-Age) within 30 days of hire. This certification consists of 45 hours in Child Growth and Development and 45 hours in Curriculum, Methods, and Materials. OR  Must possess and maintain Child Development Associate (CDA) credentials with preschool designation by 7/1/2027, OR earn an associate’s degree in early childhood education or child development by 7/1/2027.
  • Must possess and maintain ServSafe Food Handler Certification (or equivalent) within the program’s specified timeframe following date of hire.

 

EDUCATION:

High School Diploma, GED or equivalent, required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous experience working in a preschool setting is required.
  • Experience supporting food service or meal preparation in a structured setting is preferred.
