Brief Position Overview
The purpose of the Academic Support Center (ASC) is to provide services that promote the academic success of students at Montana State University Billings. The mission of the ASC is to enrich the MSUB culture by supporting students and faculty in order to enhance the overall effectiveness of the teaching and learning process.
The Assistant Director will be a vital member of the ASC Leadership Team. This position reports directly to the Director of the ASC. This position will supervise the Writing Center Tutoring staff (approx. 10 employees) at both the University Campus and City College locations, while working closely with the Retention Director and Associate Director of Tutoring to carry out the department's daily operations.
The successful candidate will have the ability to effectively communicate the departmental mission to diverse constituencies, conceptualize and develop methods to implement innovative service enhancements, demonstrate skill in presenting an excellent student/customer service attitude, provide leadership in a technical, constantly changing integrated student services environment, possess excellent communication skills including the ability to understand a wide range of user needs and technical issues, the ability to interact effectively (listen, respect others opinions/needs) and negotiate with internal and external department staff, and the ability to represent the Academic Support Center and MSU Billings in a professional and courteous manner.

Duties and Responsibilities

Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- The successful candidate must hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree in education, Student Affairs, Humanities, English, or a related field and have at least 3 years of experience.
- Three years of tutoring, mentoring, advising and/or other student success/academic support
- Demonstrated knowledge of effective student success/academic support strategies
- Experience in hiring and training tutors/academic support personnel
- Experience in supervising student and/or professional personnel
- Experience with non-traditional and/or first-generation college students
- Experience working in a learning center, writing center, or similar environment to include evidence of at least
- Experience working in an LMS environment (D2L, Canvas, Moodle, or other system)
- Experience working with at-risk students or students experiencing academic distress
- Knowledge of collection and distribution of data to inform practice, improve organizational performance, and report preparation/analysis
- Exceptional communication skills (both written and verbal) including the ability to deliver effective presentations to large, diverse audiences
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail and ability to work without supervision
- Proficiency in computer applications, especially Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- Master's degree in a Writing discipline, Student Affairs, or Humanities related field and have at least 5 years of experience.
- Five years of progressive responsibility working in a learning center, tutoring center, or similar environment
- Experience in hiring and training tutors/academic support personnel
- Experience in supervising student and/or professional personnel
- Previous tutoring experience (especially in a writing center or similar environment)
- Experience with CRLA programing and training
- Two or more years of instructional experience at the secondary or collegiate level
- Experience (preferably in a teaching role) working in a Writing program
- Demonstrated commitment to pedagogy
