What is a learning designer?

A learning designer develops educational activities using a variety of online tools. The goal of this career is to help students acquire knowledge and skills as effectively as possible. As a learning designer, your duties may include creating eLearning experiences and course content that aid in retention, identifying students’ educational needs, conducting research, and documenting the results of each project. You also work toward the fulfillment of state and national educational goals or requirements. To become a learning designer, you typically include a master’s degree in educational technology, instructional design, or a similar field and relevant work experience. Additional qualifications include teaching and technical skills, as well as creative problem-solving ability.

What does a learning designer do?

A Learning Designer, also known as an instructional designer, develops educational materials and experiences to help learners acquire specific skills or knowledge. They analyze learning needs, create course outlines, design engaging content, and often use technology to deliver training in schools, businesses, or online platforms. Learning Designers collaborate with subject matter experts and use best practices in pedagogy and instructional technology to ensure effective learning outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a learning designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Learning Designer, you need expertise in instructional design, curriculum development, and learning theory, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. How do learning designers typically collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) during a project?

Learning Designers often work closely with subject matter experts to ensure that instructional materials are both accurate and engaging. This collaboration usually involves conducting interviews or workshops with SMEs to gather content, reviewing drafts for technical accuracy, and incorporating feedback at several stages of development. Position: Graphic Designer
Project: Wadata - Niger Development Food Security Activity (DFSA)
Organization: The Kaizen Company, on behalf of Tetra Tech
Position Type: Short-term Technical Assistance
Location: Remote
Reports to: Strategic Learning Lead
Period of Performance: Estimated Aug 6 - Aug 22, 2025, part-time support
About Kaizen
Kaizen, A Tetra Tech Company, is an incubator for innovative, scalable solutions that address emerging market challenges and opportunities. Our proven solutions catalyze locally driven, organizational, and institutional performance improvements and shift the development model into one that is bottom-up and ongoing. We leverage existing knowledge, new technologies, and innovative business models.
Kaizen seeks applications for graphic design services to support the development of knowledge, learning, and communication documents for the end-of-project activities for the USG-funded Wadata Resilience Food Security Activity (RFSA), which ends in September 2025.
About Wadata
The Wadata Activity, a 7-year, $50 million USAID/Bureau of Humanitarian Aid (BHA)-funded multi-sector Resilience and Food Security Activity (RFSA), aims to sustainably improve food security, food and nutritional security, and resilience of extremely poor and vulnerable households in Zinder through stratified interventions targeting communities, households, and individuals. Launched in October 2018, Wadata will continue until September 2025. To achieve its objective, Wadata is implementing activities in three integrated focus areas:
• Objective 1: Strengthening collective action to deal with shocks and stresses linked to food, nutritional, and water security.
• Objective 2: Increased capacity, assets, and agency for better access to adequate and diversified food at all times.
• Objective 3: Improvement of nutrition, health, hygiene, and sanitation of pregnant and lactating women, adolescents, children under 5 years old, and their families.
Overview
We seek high-quality graphic design services from a highly skilled and experienced Graphic Designer. The ideal candidate will assist Wadata in producing high-quality knowledge-sharing products and facilitate the transfer of the successes and lessons learned during Wadata's implementation.

• Design and edit graphic elements for short videos.
• Design and edit communication materials, such as banners, posters, brochures, infographics, and other products for capitalization, knowledge sharing and learning events, press conferences, and other venues.
• Deliver products in French and/or English.
Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communications, user experience design, or other related fields is required.
  • Minimum four years of work experience in graphic design, visual marketing, data visualization, or anything related, with a strong portfolio of illustrations and other graphics.
  • Proficiency in using design software and applications such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Photoshop, CapCut, and others.
  • Strong attention to design aesthetics and visual details.
  • Excellent communication skills.
