This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Lead Backend Engineer based in the Netherlands.

As a Lead Backend Engineer, you will join a high-performing engineering team delivering advanced software solutions for global enterprise clients.
You will take ownership of designing, building, and scaling modern backend systems that support mission-critical applications.
This role combines deep technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, allowing you to guide engineering practices and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
You will work on challenging projects involving cloud platforms, distributed architectures, APIs, and AI-enabled products.
The position is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems while mentoring others and driving innovation.
You will be part of a remote-first environment that values autonomy, continuous learning, and engineering excellence.

Accountabilities:

As a Lead Backend Engineer, you will be responsible for architecting and delivering scalable backend solutions while providing technical leadership across complex software projects. You will collaborate with engineering teams, clients, and technical specialists to build reliable systems using modern technologies and development practices.

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend architectures, including microservices, APIs, containers, and cloud-based solutions.
  • Lead technical delivery for complex software engineering projects, ensuring high-quality implementation and effective engineering practices.
  • Build and deploy backend solutions using modern frameworks, with a strong focus on C# and .NET technologies.
  • Architect and optimize distributed applications hosted on cloud platforms, particularly Azure environments.
  • Develop and integrate AI/ML-enabled capabilities into production backend systems, including APIs, pipelines, and inference services.
  • Collaborate with AI and machine learning specialists to transform models into reliable, scalable production solutions.
  • Establish and improve engineering standards around architecture, deployment, monitoring, and performance.
  • Mentor engineers, provide technical guidance, and contribute to team development and knowledge sharing.
  • Support client-facing engagements by translating business requirements into effective technical solutions.
  • Promote best practices in DevOps, CI/CD, automation, and software quality.
Requirements:

You are an experienced backend engineering professional with strong architectural skills, a passion for technology, and the ability to lead complex technical initiatives. You are comfortable working independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively with global teams.

  • 10+ years of professional software development experience focused on backend technologies and modern application architectures.
  • Strong hands-on experience with C# and .NET development.
  • Proven experience designing, building, and deploying scalable distributed systems using APIs, containers, cloud platforms, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience developing solutions on cloud infrastructure, preferably Azure.
  • Practical experience contributing to AI/ML-enabled products, including integrating AI services or machine learning models into backend systems.
  • Experience working with ML/AI specialists to support model deployment, monitoring, data flows, and production performance.
  • Previous experience leading engineering teams and mentoring developers.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive, adaptable, and solution-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fully remote environment with strong self-management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Degree in Computer Science or equivalent technical experience.
