The main difference between a Lead Accountant and a Senior Accountant is that the Lead Accountant typically supervises accounting staff and manages complex financial tasks, while the Senior Accountant focuses on detailed accounting work and supporting team members. Both roles often require similar certifications like CPA and are integral to finance teams, but the Lead Accountant has more leadership responsibilities.

What is a lead accountant?

Lead Accountants are experienced accounting professionals who oversee the financial operations and reporting activities within an organization. They are responsible for managing accounting teams, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and preparing financial statements and reports. Lead Accountants often supervise daily accounting processes, implement internal controls, and provide strategic financial advice to management. Their leadership role is crucial in maintaining accurate financial records and supporting overall business decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lead accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lead Accountant, you need strong expertise in accounting principles, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and often a CPA certification. Proficiency with general ledger software, ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, and advanced Excel skills is essential for managing complex financial data. Leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication are critical soft skills for managing teams and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate financial management, regulatory adherence, and the ability to guide teams toward organizational financial goals.

What are some common challenges faced by a lead accountant when managing a team during month-end closing?

One of the main challenges for a Lead Accountant during month-end closing is ensuring accuracy and timeliness while coordinating tasks among team members. Balancing workload distribution, addressing discrepancies quickly, and maintaining clear communication are essential to avoid bottlenecks. Additionally, staying updated with regulatory changes and integrating new technologies can add complexity. Proactive planning and fostering a collaborative environment help mitigate these challenges and ensure a smooth closing process.

As a rapidly growing organization, we are seeking a self-starting Senior Accountant who can solve problems in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. This role will manage accounting and support operations through financial analysis, process improvement and documentation, and the implementation and maintenance of systems and controls. Reporting directly to the Controller & Director of Strategic Finance, you will help build efficient, scalable, best-in-class accounting and finance functions that support our growth, with high visibility to the CFO and senior leadership team. We take pride in a fast-paced environment where team members are empowered to make KBH better every day through transparency, autonomy, accountability, and intellectual humility.
Roles & Responsibilities
  • In-depth involvement across all accounting areas with ownership of payroll, A/P, and month-end close entries and reconciliations
  • Manage General Ledger and prepare/post journal entries, ensuring all business transactions are reported in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Complete all month-end close activities, including reconciliations for all accruals, prepaids, reserves, fixed assets, leases, depreciation/amortization, and debt
  • Participate in preparing schedules and supporting documents during various audits and examinations (financial statements, 401k, insurance, tax and other related compliance)
  • Run the bi-weekly payroll process for the company
  • Identify and prioritize areas of opportunity to automate and scale business processes, analyses, and reporting
  • Document and monitor internal controls, in addition to assisting with periodic internal audit procedures
  • Review key business process designs to improve expediency, efficiency, and quality while ensuring compliance with regulations and industry best practices
  • Participate in the development and detailed review of annual operating budgets and financial performance projections
  • Assist with financial analysis and variance analysis of monthly financial results
  • Develop and maintain a culture of transparency, collaboration, feedback, and excellence, ensuring a positive and productive work environment
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
  • Active CPA designation preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in accounting required, with strong general ledger and month-end close experience
  • Desired 2+ years of experience in public accounting
  • Experience working within an accounting software environment; familiarity with Sage Intacct preferred
  • Experience reviewing lease agreements and understanding of accounting for lease transactions (ASC 842)
  • Advanced skillset in Excel required; inclusive of data cleaning/aggregation/analysis tools, such as VLOOKUPS, Pivot Tables, and commonly used financial formulas
  • Demonstrated experience building financial models, automating reports, and aggregating, cleaning, and analyzing large/complex financial and operational data sets required
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Power Query and Power Pivot preferred
  • Experience using PowerPoint or other presentation tools to create management and Board presentations
  • Prior C-Level exposure and familiarity working in a high-growth environment preferred
  • Self-motivated contributor, with ability to operate independently to drive results in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience learning new systems and tools and proactively looking for opportunities to create operational efficiencies with existing processes
  • Background in multi-facility healthcare or other multi-business unit reporting environment preferred
  • Familiarity with ABA and Autism services are a plus, though not required
  • Data-based decision maker, driving recommendations through methodical analysis over gut/feel
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and comfort in leading strategic decision making, project prioritization, as well as financial and human capital allocation for privately backed organizations
