Job Description:

Provides basic spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and caregivers under supervision. Works within a multidisciplinary team to support whole-person care.

Position Details:

Variable shifts, weekend coverage required

Essential Functions

  • Assists the patient and their family and/or other visitors in coping with psychological, social, emotional, and spiritual needs in times of illness, trauma and/or stress.

  • Help preserve a patient-centered attitude of care.

  • Provides timely and sensitive spiritual care to patients, families, caregivers, and physicians/advanced care providers via individual and group interactions.

  • Systematically and intentionally gather data through patient care and interactions with family and other interdisciplinary team members to provide whole person care, and document ongoing spiritual assessment, interventions, and outcomes.

  • Actively promotes an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration as a member of interdisciplinary teams.

  • Assists patients and families with advance directives and end-of-life resources. Provides resources for transition, bereavement, and loss.

  • Participates in multidisciplinary patient rounds, care conferences, ethics consultations and documents, as appropriate, in patients' electronic medical record.

  • Responds to crisis situations (e.g. resuscitations, trauma, rapid response, death, BEST and Security alerts, etc.) to provide spiritual care and support, including pager coverage to meet the required hours of the care-site.

  • Participates in on call responsibilities as requested.

  • Assists with the development of the department's plan for continuous quality improvement.

Required Qualifications

  • 1 unit of Accredited Clinical Pastoral Education meeting approval of NACC/APC BCCi, completed within the first 18 months of hire

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Documentation from ecclesial judicatory body of current endorsement and/or reference prescribed in accordance with applicant's spiritual/faith tradition (received or reaffirmed within the last 12 months) articulating current endorsement/authorization for hospital chaplaincy ministry and applicant's good standing with endorsing/authorizing body. The letter must be mailed, emailed, or faxed directly from an endorsing/recommending organization. Faith groups must be recognized by the Department of Defense (Armed Forces chaplains Board) or previously reviewed and approved by the BCCi. If not, approval of documentation of authorization/endorsement must come from the Intermountain Peaks Mission office regarding a review of the faith group.

  • One year of relevant spiritual care experience

  • Knowledge and respect of the religious beliefs and practices of various faiths, groups, denominations, and philosophies.

  • Ability to provide pastoral/spiritual counsel to people during periods of stress.

  • Appropriate and professional documentation in the electronic medical record and other departmental, site or system-based data tracking

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Completion of Accredited Graduate Theological Degree (MDiv or Equivalent)

  • Two or more units of Accredited Clinical Pastoral Education

Physical Requirements

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, documents, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs.

  • Frequent interactions with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.

  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate supplies and equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use for typing, accessing needed information, etc.

  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
