What is an LCDC internship?

An LCDC internship is a supervised practical training experience required for individuals seeking to become Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors (LCDC). During the internship, candidates gain hands-on experience working with clients who have substance use disorders in approved settings, such as treatment centers or community health organizations. Interns are mentored by licensed professionals and complete a set number of hours performing counseling-related duties. This internship is a crucial step in learning the skills and ethics needed to become a qualified counselor and is required before full licensure. Successful completion ensures the intern is prepared for the responsibilities of an LCDC.

What responsibilities can I expect during an LCDC internship, and how closely will I work with licensed counselors?

As an LCDC (Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor) intern, you will typically assist with client intakes, documentation, group facilitation, and individual counseling sessions under supervision. Interns often collaborate closely with licensed counselors, receiving direct feedback and mentorship to develop hands-on skills in assessment, treatment planning, and ethical decision-making. This collaborative environment helps you build confidence while ensuring clients receive quality care. Regular supervision meetings are a key part of the internship, providing opportunities for reflection, professional growth, and support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an LCDC intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an LCDC (Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor) Intern, you need foundational knowledge of addiction counseling, assessment techniques, and case management, generally supported by enrollment in an accredited counseling program and state registration as an intern. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs) and clinical documentation systems is commonly required. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and cultural sensitivity help build trust and rapport with clients. These competencies ensure ethical, effective support for individuals in recovery and contribute to successful treatment outcomes.
