How do law librarians typically collaborate with legal professionals and faculty in a law library setting?

Law librarians work closely with attorneys, faculty, and students to provide research support, curate legal resources, and deliver instructional sessions on legal research techniques. They often collaborate on complex legal research projects, assist with reference queries, and help design resource guides tailored to specific courses or practice areas. This teamwork fosters a dynamic environment where effective communication and a deep understanding of legal information needs are essential for success.

What is the difference between Law Library vs Paralegal?

AspectLaw LibraryParalegal
Required CredentialsTypically requires a law library certification or relevant library science degreeUsually requires a paralegal certificate or associate degree in paralegal studies
Work EnvironmentLaw libraries, legal institutions, law firmsLaw firms, corporate legal departments, government agencies
Industry UsageLegal research, library management, legal information organizationLegal research, document preparation, case management

Law librarians focus on managing legal information resources and assisting with legal research within law libraries, often requiring specialized library science credentials. Paralegals perform legal support tasks such as research, document drafting, and case organization, typically with paralegal certification. While both roles support legal professionals, law librarians specialize in information management, whereas paralegals are more involved in casework and legal procedures.

What is a law library?

A law library is a specialized library that provides access to a wide range of legal resources, such as statutes, case law, regulations, legal journals, and research materials. These libraries are typically used by lawyers, judges, law students, and researchers to find authoritative legal information. Law libraries can be found in law schools, courts, government agencies, and private law firms, and often offer both physical and online resources to support legal research and education.

What Are the Qualifications to Work in a Law Library?

The primary qualifications for working in a law library are a Juris Doctor degree or master's degree and two years of experience in a library area. You do not need to be a lawyer or a legal assistant to work in a law library. In fact, most law libraries are happy to hire applicants who focus on library science instead of the law itself, as this role focuses more on finding information than using it. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of this position requires communication skills, research skills, organizational skills, and the ability to respond to requests from patrons quickly. Law libraries are somewhat geographically limited to law schools and other places related to the judicial system, such as courthouses. As such, you may need to commute or move to work in one.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Law Librarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Law Librarian, you need expertise in legal research, information management, and a master's degree in library science (often with a focus on law or a J.D.). Familiarity with legal databases such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, and integrated library systems is typically required. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills help you effectively support attorneys, students, and researchers. These competencies ensure accurate, efficient access to legal information, directly impacting the quality of legal research and services provided.

Emory University is a leading research university that fosters excellence and attracts world-class talent to innovate today and prepare leaders for the future. We welcome candidates who can contribute to the excellence of our academic community.
Description
Emory Law, a top-tier law school and the home of the Hugh F. MacMillan Law Library, is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and service-oriented professional to join our team as a Law Librarian for Research Services. Emory Law is an intimate, collegial, and friendly school located in a residential part of the thriving city of Atlanta. MacMillan Law Library is a welcoming and supportive place to work. We invite candidates with at least four years of experience to apply. This is a full-time, hybrid position and is available immediately.
Under the general supervision of the Associate Law Librarian for Research Services, Research Services librarians provide high-quality legal and non-legal research assistance to law library users, including students, faculty, members of the local bar, and the general public. This includes providing classroom instruction in a variety of settings, ranging from for-credit instruction to one-off sessions; providing scholarship support for law faculty; interacting with a variety of patron groups while staffing the library's Reference Desk; and supporting and participating in outreach programs targeting both students and faculty.
Additional Responsibilities include:
  • Staffing the MacMillan Law Library's Reference Desk and assisting users with legal research methods and materials (a few evening and weekend hours may occasionally be required);
  • Designing and teaching one to two upper-level, topic-specific Advanced Legal Research courses for inclusion in our robust teaching rotation which includes up to four one-credit courses per semester;
  • Working with a variety of student groups - including faculty research assistants, journal students, international students, and law school graduate students - to assist with their library and legal research needs;
  • Supporting Emory Law's approximately 35 Tenure/Tenure-track faculty by participating in the Library's Faculty Services Program which supports faculty scholarship as well as some classroom assistance for seminar courses;
  • Creating and maintaining online research guides, bibliographies, and other materials that enhance access to legal information;
  • Serving on law library and university library committees;
  • Engaging in professional development activities, scholarship, and service; and
  • Performing other associated duties as required.

Qualifications
Required:
  • A JD from an ABA-accredited law school (or equivalent) and an MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution or a BA in Law with an MA in LIS from an Accelerated Masters Program (AMP). Candidates who will complete their degrees prior to the start date will be considered;
  • Minimum of four years library experience including experience providing library reference (or other types of customer service experience) and conducting legal and non-legal research;
  • Strong communication skills; including a high comfort level interacting with colleagues and a wide range of library users;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently within a framework of assigned responsibilities, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with others.

Preferred:
  • Demonstrated success in teaching or public speaking; and
  • Desire to participate in professional law librarianship activities at regional and national levels.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary is based on education, qualifications, and experience. Emory University offers librarians an excellent benefits package which includes, among other things, 24 days PTO annually plus 11 additional holidays; an array of retirement plans; courtesy scholarships for employee, spouse, and dependent children; support for professional development; and support for involvement in professional organizations.
This position is eligible for remote work one day per week during the school year (Aug-April) and two days per week during the summer (May-July).
To apply:
Please include a cover letter addressed to Search Committee, Law Librarian for Research Services, and Curriculum Vitae. Contact information for three professional references will be required later in the interviewing process.
Applications will be reviewed as they are received. For additional information on the Hugh F. MacMillan Law Library, visit our web site at http://library.law.emory.edu.
