What is a law librarian?

A law librarian works for a university, law school, or legal firm. Their job duties include overseeing operations, facilitating education, providing research materials to students, and validating sources. Whether working for a school or a law firm, a law librarian offers information to students or professionals and helps them access the resources that they need for work or learning the practice of law. Career qualifications include a master’s degree in library science, and some states require licensure.

What are some typical challenges a law librarian might face when supporting legal research for attorneys and students?

Law Librarians often navigate the challenge of staying current with rapidly evolving legal databases and research technologies. They are frequently tasked with managing complex research requests, which may involve locating obscure or specialized legal materials under tight deadlines. Collaboration with attorneys, professors, and students requires strong communication skills to clarify research needs and ensure resources are both comprehensive and up-to-date. Additionally, balancing traditional print resources with digital collections and providing training on research tools are common aspects of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a law librarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Law Librarian, you need expertise in legal research, information management, and typically a master's degree in library science (MLS/MLIS) with a focus on law or a juris doctor (JD). Familiarity with legal databases like Westlaw, LexisNexis, and library catalog systems is crucial. Strong organizational skills, analytical thinking, and excellent communication help in supporting attorneys, students, and researchers effectively. These skills are important to ensure accurate, timely access to legal information and to facilitate informed decision-making in legal environments.

Full-time

Job description

The Willis Law Firm, a boutique firm and nationally recognized leader in DUI defense, is looking for a highly motivated trial attorney with at least three years of experience to join our team! The attorneys at our firm work hard to ensure that every client receives the best possible defense and representation. If you are looking for opportunities to change the face of criminal law, this is the firm for you. We do hundreds of motions hearings every year and file at least one lengthy memorandum in every case.

We have an extremely comprehensive library of Memorandums and Briefs that Greg Willis modifies weekly to keep up with case law. Our attorneys take cases to trial and on appeal to the Georgia Court of Appeals, the Georgia Supreme Court, and the United States Supreme Court (our firm has cases pending in all three courts that could dramatically change current case law). Greg Willis has handled over 60 appeals to each of Georgia’s appellate courts and approximately 10 appeals to the United States Supreme Court. The lawyers in the firm work on all the appeals together, and Georgia’s current DUI laws are being challenged by our firm as they relate to the admissibility of blood, breath, and urine testing. Our attorneys also invest time in pro bono work, including writing briefs for the GACDL Amicus Committee and assisting GACDL in other important endeavors.

Our ideal candidate is committed to excellence and integrity in everything they do, has a positive attitude, works hard, takes initiative, and is a team player. The Willis Law Firm strives to make a difference in the lives of clients and in Georgia law with a passion for our constitutional rights. We use MyCase case management software that has been tweaked for our firm to make our jobs less stressful (by tracking all deadlines with many reminders).

We are a growing firm with endless opportunities. We offer strong benefits and compensation packages on the high end of the market, including:

  • Salary plus incentive opportunities (quarterly bonus opportunities)
  • Profit sharing
  • 401(k)
  • Health Insurance
  • Paid time off
  • Company Holidays
  • Continuing Education Benefits
  • Business-driven work environment partnered with high-growth career opportunities
Compensation:

$100,000+ yearly

Responsibilities:
  • Handling cases from initial interview through motions, trial, and appeal, using the firm's culture and approach to each case
  • Making court appearances
  • Conducting prospective client intake interviews
  • Legal communication (e.g., plea negotiations, courtroom communications with prosecutors and judges)

Qualifications:
  • Degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Must have at least three years of experience as a trial attorney
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, Excel)
  • Experience using the MyCase case management system is preferred
  • Must be an active member in good standing with the Georgia Bar Association
  • Applicants should be motivated self-starters who are able to work independently and communicate effectively with clients and the team
  • Must have a proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Possess a demonstrated history of excellence in their career, as well as a passion for serving criminal defense clients
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are a must
  • Excellent analytical abilities
  • Good organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team
  • Ability to exercise flexibility, initiative, good judgment, and discretion
