Job description

About the team
OpenAI's mission is to ensure that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. The ChatGPT team works across research, engineering, product, and design to bring OpenAI's technology to the world. We serve a diverse audience of users who are already using ChatGPT daily in their lives and work.
We seek to learn from deployment and distribute the benefits of AI, while ensuring that this powerful tool is used responsibly and safely. Safety is more important to us than unfettered growth.
Design plays a critical role here. To succeed in our mission, it's crucial that we make our technology intuitive and accessible. We're hiring a Content Designer to create products that are easy to use, beautiful, and push the boundaries of what's possible. As an early team member, you'll have a huge part in shaping our product direction and design culture.
About the role
In this role, you'll collaborate closely with a small team of product designers and cross-functional partners to craft product experiences of today and tomorrow. You'll work on the end-to-end design of new features and improvements across a range of OpenAI products. You'll help chart our course into the future as we evolve our technology, product, and design paradigms.
The ideal candidate is a strong craft leader with deep product judgment, technical curiosity, and a systems mindset. You should be excited to understand AI capabilities and limitations, and help evolve the practice of Content Design with AI in mind.
This role is available in either our San Francisco or New York offices. We offer relocation assistance to new employees.
What you'll do in this role
  • Lead content strategy for high-impact product areas, from early product framing and information architecture to final UX writing and launch polish
  • Help define product concepts, user mental models, narratives, terminology, and moments where trust or comprehension may break
  • Shape naming, framing, and language systems for new, ambiguous, or experimental AI product experiences
  • Create content frameworks, standards, naming systems, terminology guidance, product voice guidance, and domain playbooks that scale across teams
  • Contribute to product language infrastructure, including glossaries, pattern libraries, review pathways, evaluation rubrics, prompt libraries, and quality guidance
  • Use AI-assisted tools and workflows to expand how content and design work gets done - from prototyping and prompt creation to design-system components, UX tooling, and faster iteration.
  • Define standards for AI-assisted or model-generated product copy, including prompt templates, tone constraints, and quality rubrics
  • Engage in user research to understand user needs, comprehension, expectations, and trust
  • Mentor other designers and cross-functional partners in scaling content design best practices and clear product communication.
  • Help strengthen Content Design team culture, operating rhythms, and scalable practices
You might thrive in this role if you
  • Bring 5+ years of experience leading content design for large-scale software products, with a track record of shipping high-quality work in zero-to-one or ambiguous product areas
  • Can measure, communicate, and advocate for the impact of content design on product quality, user understanding, trust, and adoption
  • Have a track record of building scalable content systems and governance that help teams make better naming, terminology, voice and tone, UX writing, and content QA decisions.
  • Understand localization best practices and know how to partner effectively with localization teams
  • Have experience defining and evolving product voice and tone across complex product ecosystems
  • Partner effectively with AI research, product, design, engineering, policy, and other technical teams to translate complex requirements into clear product experiences.
  • Bring experience with or deep interest in prompt creation, model-generated content, AI-assisted workflows, evals, quality rubrics, and UX tooling
  • Are energized by building content systems that help teams move faster
