What is a landscape intern?

Landscape Interns are students or recent graduates who assist professional landscape architects, designers, or contractors with various tasks related to designing, planning, and maintaining outdoor spaces. They typically gain hands-on experience by working on projects such as gardens, parks, urban environments, and ecological restorations. Their responsibilities may include site analysis, drafting plans, preparing presentations, and supporting project management. The internship is an opportunity to learn industry skills, software, and sustainable practices while building a professional portfolio.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a landscape intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Landscape Intern, you need a basic understanding of landscape design principles, horticulture, and environmental science, often supported by progress toward a degree in landscape architecture or a related field. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, as well as basic hand-drafting and model-building skills, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication help interns collaborate within teams and contribute innovative ideas. These skills and qualities are crucial for supporting project development, learning industry standards, and building a foundation for future professional growth.

What types of projects and tasks can a landscape intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Landscape Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of tasks that support landscape architects and designers, such as assisting with site analysis, preparing conceptual drawings, conducting research on plant materials, and helping to create presentations for clients. You may also participate in site visits, collaborate with other interns or team members, and gain hands-on experience with design software commonly used in the industry. This role offers a valuable opportunity to observe the design process from concept to implementation while building technical and teamwork skills essential for a future career in landscape architecture.
