Landscape Helper information

What is a landscape helper?

Landscape helpers assist landscapers and groundskeepers with tasks such as planting, mowing, trimming, watering, and maintaining outdoor areas. They may also help with installing sod, spreading mulch, moving materials, and cleaning up job sites. This role typically involves physical labor outdoors and can be seasonal, depending on the region. Landscape helpers often work for landscaping companies, golf courses, or property maintenance firms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a landscape helper?

To thrive as a Landscape Helper, you generally need basic knowledge of landscaping techniques, physical stamina, and familiarity with gardening tools or equipment, often obtained through on-the-job training rather than formal education. Experience with power tools, lawnmowers, trimmers, and possibly pesticide application systems is typically required. Strong teamwork, reliability, and attention to detail help individuals stand out in this role. These skills and qualities ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality landscape maintenance that meets client expectations.

What are some common challenges a landscape helper might face when starting out, and how can they be overcome?

New Landscape Helpers often encounter challenges such as adjusting to physically demanding work, learning to use various tools safely, and understanding plant care basics. To overcome these, it's helpful to ask questions, seek guidance from experienced team members, and take advantage of any on-the-job training offered. Staying hydrated, following safety protocols, and being open to feedback can also make the transition smoother and help you quickly become a valuable member of the landscaping team.

  • Handling Spring/Fall clean-ups to refresh and prepare the beds for the changing seasons
  • Weeding and maintaining planting beds to keep them tidy, neat, and healthy
  • Caring for perennials with seasonal tasks like deadheading, cutting back, and dividing plants to control their size and ensure continuous growth
  • Providing care for small trees and shrubs, including renewal pruning, deadwooding, structural pruning, and shaping using both hand and power tools
  • Using the proper tools and equipment for each specific task, ensuring efficiency and precision with every job
  • Making smart decisions based on weather conditions and the season to keep plants thriving in any environment

What you?ll bring to the table as a Bedcare Technician:

Don?t worry if you?re new to the field ? we?re excited to help you grow! We?re looking for someone with a real passion for horticulture and a drive to learn. Experience is great, but what matters most to us is your positive attitude, strong work ethic, and eagerness to dive in and get your hands dirty. If you?re ready to learn and make an impact, we want you on our team!

  • High School Diploma ? a solid foundation to build on
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver?s License ? the ability to safely operate company vehicles
  • A passion for plants and the outdoors ? an enthusiasm for nature and all things green
  • Eagerness to learn ? a drive to continuously improve your skills and grow with the company
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills ? working well with others and keeping everyone on the same page
  • A positive attitude and strong work ethic ? bringing energy and dedication to every task
  • Willingness to master turf practices and techniques, as well as identifying various plants to enhance your expertise
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, embracing the elements to keep our landscapes looking great year-round
  • Reliability and punctuality ? being someone who shows up on time and ready to work hard every day
  • Physical stamina ? being able to handle the physical demands of the job, including lifting, bending, and working long hours

Physical Requirements:

The Bedcare Technician position at Lowney?s Landscaping requires physical strength, stamina, and the ability to perform a range of landscaping tasks. The ideal candidate should be able to meet the following physical demands:

  • Ability to lift, carry, and move landscaping materials such as soil, mulch, plants, and equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Kneeling, bending, and crouching for extended periods while planting, weeding, and performing maintenance tasks in the beds.
  • Standing for long periods during tasks such as weeding, trimming, and pruning.
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to handle tools and equipment accurately, including hand tools for pruning, weeding, and cutting back plants.
