While a Land Development Internship offers exposure to project planning and design in land development, a Land Surveyor specializes in land measurement and boundary determination, often requiring licensure. Both roles are integral to land projects but differ in focus, credentials, and work environment.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a Land Development Internship?

As a Land Development Intern, you can expect to participate in a variety of projects such as site planning, feasibility studies, and assisting with environmental impact assessments. You'll often support experienced engineers and planners by helping to prepare site layouts, reviewing zoning regulations, and conducting field visits to gather data. Interns typically collaborate closely with civil engineers, surveyors, and municipal officials, gaining exposure to the entire land development process from concept to permitting. This hands-on experience offers valuable insight into both the technical and regulatory aspects of land development, positioning you well for future roles in the industry.

What are the career opportunities in land development?

A land development internship can lead to careers in urban planning, civil engineering, real estate development, and environmental consulting. These roles often require skills in project management, GIS software, and knowledge of zoning laws. Career advancement may involve obtaining professional certifications and gaining experience in project design and permitting processes.

What would a development intern do?

A land development intern assists with tasks related to planning, designing, and managing land development projects. They may conduct site inspections, prepare reports, use design software, and support project teams to ensure compliance with regulations and project timelines.

Is 23 an hour good for an internship?

For a land development internship, $23 an hour is above the average hourly rate, which typically ranges from $15 to $20. This rate may reflect the internship's location, required skills, and level of responsibility, and it can be considered competitive in the industry. Internships often offer lower pay, but higher rates can indicate specialized skills or a more advanced position.

What is a Land Development Internship?

A Land Development Internship is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in the process of transforming raw land into usable property for residential, commercial, or industrial purposes. Interns typically work with civil engineers, planners, and project managers to learn about site analysis, permitting, design, and construction phases. Responsibilities may include assisting with research, preparing reports, site visits, and supporting project documentation. The internship provides valuable exposure to the real estate and construction industries, helping interns build relevant skills and industry connections.

What are the big 4 internships?

The 'Big 4' internships typically refer to internship programs offered by the four largest professional services firms: Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Ernst & Young (EY), and KPMG. These firms offer internships in areas such as accounting, consulting, audit, and advisory, providing valuable experience and potential pathways to full-time roles in finance and consulting industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Land Development Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Land Development Intern, you need a solid understanding of civil engineering principles, land use regulations, and basic project management, often supported by progress toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with AutoCAD, GIS software, and Microsoft Office is typically required, and internships may seek candidates with experience in surveying or environmental analysis. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and manage evolving project requirements. These skills ensure interns can contribute to site assessments, design solutions, and support the successful delivery of development projects.

Job description

Entry-Level Field Engineer

Apex, NC

Start a Career, Not Just a Job

Looking for an opportunity to get your foot in the door with an engineering team that will invest in your growth?

We're seeking an ambitious, hands-on Entry-Level Engineer who is eager to learn, enjoys being in the field, and wants to build a long-term career in engineering and construction-related services. This role is ideal for someone early in their career—whether through school, internships, co-ops, construction experience, or related engineering exposure—who is ready to roll up their sleeves, learn from experienced professionals, and earn increasing responsibility over time.

If you're the type of person who takes initiative, asks questions, enjoys solving problems, and wants to be part of a close-knit team where hard work and attitude are recognized, this could be the opportunity you've been looking for.

Why This Role Stands Out
  • Get hands-on field experience early in your career.
  • Learn directly from experienced engineers and project managers.
  • Gain exposure to environmental, civil, construction, stormwater, wastewater, and site development projects.
  • Work in a role that combines outdoor field work with technical engineering experience.
  • Join a team where your attitude, work ethic, and willingness to learn matter as much as your experience.
  • Be part of a company where growth is earned and career advancement opportunities are available for those who take initiative.
  • Build a strong foundation that can lead to project management, technical leadership, and professional licensure opportunities.

What You'll Do

This position offers a unique blend of field and office experience, with a strong emphasis on gaining practical, real-world engineering exposure.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with site investigations, field reconnaissance, and construction observations.
  • Perform field data collection and site assessments.
  • Support stormwater, wastewater, and environmental engineering projects.
  • Assist with site grading, volume calculations, and engineering analyses.
  • Work alongside project managers and senior engineers to solve project challenges.
  • Support environmental and civil engineering projects for both government and private-sector clients.
  • Prepare calculations, documentation, reports, and project deliverables.
  • Travel to project sites throughout the region as needed.
  • Learn the engineering, permitting, design, and construction process from project kickoff through completion.

Who We're Looking For

We're less focused on finding someone with years of experience and more interested in finding the right attitude.

You might be a great fit if you are:

  • A early-career professional or graduate (recent) in Civil, Environmental, or Construction Engineering.
  • Someone with internship, co-op, field, construction, or relevant hands-on experience.
  • Interested in environmental and civil engineering projects.
  • Comfortable working both outdoors and in an office environment.
  • A self-starter who takes ownership of their work.
  • Resourceful, dependable, and eager to learn.
  • Someone with a "go-getter" mentality who is willing to put in the effort to develop professionally.
  • Excited by the idea of building a career rather than simply finding your next job.

QualificationsRequired
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related field.
  • Internship, co-op, academic project, or early-career experience in engineering, environmental services, construction, or a related field.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing to a team environment.
Preferred
  • EIT certification or plans to pursue FE/EIT certification.
  • Exposure to AutoCAD.
  • Coursework or experience related to environmental compliance, remediation, land development, stormwater, wastewater, or site development.
  • Interest in pursuing professional licensure in the future.

The Ideal Candidate

This opportunity is designed for someone who wants to learn by doing.

Someone who isn't afraid to spend time in the field.

Someone who enjoys being outside, asking questions, and tackling new challenges.

Someone who understands that the best careers are built through consistency, curiosity, and effort.

If you're looking for a place where you can gain hands-on experience, work alongside supportive mentors, and create a clear path for long-term professional growth, we'd love to hear from you.
