Job description

POSITION SUMMARY
DEFINITION
This position performs quantitative and qualitative clinical laboratory determinations as requested by physicians including procurement of specimens, computation of test results, and submitting completed reports.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a single position class in which the incumbent’s responsibility of functioning must be based on advanced knowledge and skills in providing diagnostic testing to medical staff. Incumbents are assigned to work or float in appropriate areas. Responsibilities are expanded to include participation in activities relating to quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing, policy and procedure review, in-service training and staff development.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree with successful completion of an accredited Clinical Laboratory training program as evidenced by licensure from the State of California.
Experience
Minimum one year recent experience in an approved hospital laboratory.
Licensure/Certification
American Society of Clinical Pathology certification recommended.
Possession of a valid license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the State of California is required.
KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Hospital established policies and procedures for quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
Clinical Laboratory instruments and equipment.
Clinical Laboratory terminology and Laboratory routines.
The appropriate uses of procedures and tests.
Exposure to infections and contagious diseases.
Exposure to the risk of blood borne diseases.
Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
Federal, State, and local laws and regulations governing clinical laboratory practices.
Ability to:
Perform the full range of laboratory duties and responsibilities in an acute care setting.
Plan and organize diagnostic testing procedures on patient specimens.
Maintain concise and complete records and test reports as required.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, patients, and fellow employees, and with all internal and external customers.
Handle absentee replacement on short notice.
Work occasional irregular hours.
Manage emergency or crisis situations; requires judgement/action which could result in undesirable patient outcomes.
Secure the cooperation of employees to work effectively together.
Keep abreast of developments in area of laboratory testing.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
AGE-SPECIFIC COMPETENCY (If applicable)
Maintains, demonstrates and is assessed on the knowledge and skills necessary to provide for physical, psychosocial and cultural needs appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her assigned unit.
