To thrive as a Labor Delivery RN, you need a comprehensive understanding of maternal and fetal health, labor and delivery procedures, and a current RN license—often with specialized certifications like Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). Familiarity with fetal monitoring systems, electronic health records (EHRs), and obstetric equipment is essential. Labor and Delivery RNs often encounter challenges such as high-stress situations, unpredictable shifts, and the need to make quick decisions in urgent scenarios. Many hospitals offer ongoing training and support systems to help nurses cope with the emotional and physical demands of the role, promoting both patient safety and nurse well-being.

What are Labor and Delivery RNs?

Labor and Delivery Registered Nurses (RNs) are specialized nurses who care for mothers and newborns throughout the childbirth process. These nurses work closely with obstetricians and other healthcare professionals to ensure the safety and well-being of both mother and baby. Their role is critical in identifying complications and responding quickly to emergencies during childbirth.
