POSITION SUMMARY
The Phlebotomist is responsible for collection of specimens from patients.ย  The phlebotomist is also cross-trained to assist the Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) when possible; assigned to assist in the specimen processing and filing. This person will report to the Phlebotomy Lead and Lab Manager Implements good public relations by representing the laboratory directly to patients, physicians and hospital staff at all times.ย  Assures quality of work, workflow, turn-around-time; assures accurate testing to support quality patient care; accepts suggestions and corrections and adjusts to changing situations.ย  This position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. It is expected that this individual will demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values and shall support the Hospitalโ€™s strategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality and performance improvement process activities.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assures that phlebotomy supplies are restocked for all three shifts.
  • Responsible for all clerical duties.
  • Communicates appropriately with coworkers, hospital personnel, physicians at all times.
  • Maintain coverage of the laboratory to provide adequate patient care, which may require โ€œlast minuteโ€ schedule changes.
  • Collects samples from inpatients using standard venipuncture or skin puncture techniques according to established policies and procedures.
  • Inventories, reports and restocks all phlebotomy testing supplies to ensure continuity of activities.
  • Delivers specimens to the lab as needed.
  • Responsible for data entry and appropriate proficiency using the Lab Information System (LIS) Computer systems.
  • Is proficient in using manual backup to the Lab Information System (LIS).
  • Assist customers with LIS Information.
  • Assures that the workplace is clean and neat.
  • Responsible for proper telephone etiquette at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A.ย ย  Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

B.ย  Qualifications/Experience

  • 6 months of experience required in blood specimen collections; 3 years preferred.ย Internal candidates with Current CA Certified Phlebotomy Technician License will be considered.ย 

C.ย ย  Special Skills/Knowledge

  • Proficient with LIS and computer applications
  • Current CA Certified Phlebotomy Technician License
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers from the American Heart Association.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Blue Card within 90 Days of hire or requirement notification
